Eric Longsworth

Eric Longsworth (* 1959 ) is an American jazz and fusion musician ( cello , composition ).

Longsworth studied classical cello with Gary Hoffman and Janos Starker at Indiana University before taking an apprenticeship with David Baker to immerse himself in jazz. For four years he played in various orchestras, including the Houston Symphony Orchestra and the Texas Chamber Orchestra. During this time he took part in workshops in Banff with Dave Holland , Dave Liebman , John Abercrombie and Steve Coleman .

In the 1990s he moved to Montreal, where he first performed with the group Contrevent ( Terre de Feu , 1993) before forming the Ensemble Icarus ( Quand est-ce qu'on prend des vacances?, 1994). In 1997 his first solo album I Hear You was released , which received good reviews. In 1999 his second album If Trees Could Fly , a duo with bassist Marc Johnson, was released . Longsworth migrated to France in 2002, where he presented his third album Sans Souci ( Enja ), a trio with Daniel Mille and Pierre Tanguay . He became more and more involved in the French jazz scene and worked with, among others, Sylvain Luc , Rémi Charmasson , Claude Tchamitchian , Xavier Garcia and Jean-Charles Richard . He presented his fourth album A ciel ouvert with his quartet (with Charmasson, Éric Séva , Francois Verly and Olivier Ker Ourio ) in France and South America.

In the project Le Jazz fait son Cirque music and clowns worked together (Alain Reynaud and Nicolas Bernard from the Compagnie Les Nouveaux Nez ). Between 2007 and 2010 he played over 150 shows, including at the Avignon Off Festival and five weeks in the European theater in Paris. In 2010 Longsworth met kora player Cherif Soumano and founded the World Kora Trio with him and percussionist and singer Jean-Luc Difraya , which performed in France, Canada and Mexico and released the album Korazon in 2012 , the 2015 Un poisson dans le Désert followed. In 2015 he recorded Rainbow Shell with Perrine Mansuy, Remy Deck, Jean-Luc di Fraya and Mathis Haug . He can also be heard on albums by Rémi Charmasson, René Bottlang and Sylvain Luc.
