Sylvain Luc (born April 7, 1965 in Bayonne ) is a French jazz guitarist.

Life

Luc studied violin and cello at the Bayonne Conservatory and also took classical guitar lessons. In Bayonne he played early in family groups (he recorded Basque music albums with his brothers in 1974 and 1977) and then in his own local groups.

After moving to Paris , he accompanied chansonniers there such as Georges Moustaki (1988), Philippe Léotard , Romain Didier , Catherine Lara (1993), the Argentinian Jairo and Michel Jonasz . In 1988 he also played bass in the trio of accordionist Richard Galliano and with drummer Francis Lassus (album "Piaia Naia" 1998).

In 1993 his first solo album Piaia (Basque trip ) was released. In 1994 he recorded Petits Déja in a duet with guitarist Louis Winsberg . In 1999 he formed the Trio Sud with drummer André Ceccarelli and bassist Jean-Marc Jafet (with whom he had played from 1989 to 1992) (album of the same name in 2002, album Sud 2000 by Dreyfus Jazz). In the same year he played at the Marciac Jazz Festival with Elvin Jones and in 2000 with Wynton Marsalis .

From 2006 he played regularly in the String Quartet with Didier Lockwood , Victor Bailey and Billy Cobham and in a duo with Biréli Lagrène , with whom he had recorded the album Duet in 1999. In 2003 his solo album Ambre was released by Dreyfus Jazz, in 2006 his album Joko u. a. with Michel Portal and Jacky Terrasson . Together with Biréli Lagrène, Luc presented two recordings (1999 and 2009).

Awards

In 2008 he received the Django d'Or (France) in the category “Established Musicians” and in 2010 the Prix ​​Django Reinhardt as “French Musician of the Year”.
