Biréli Lagrène (born September 4, 1966 in Soufflenheim ) is a French guitarist , composer and jazz musician .

Live and act

The Sinto Biréli Lagrène made music with his father Fiso and his brother Gaïti from an early age; he recorded his first record at the age of twelve. The first years of his career were accompanied by his discoverer, the Slovak bassist Jan Jankeje , whose label Jazzpoint Records also released the first records.

In 1986 Lagrène played with the American bassist Jaco Pastorius . Lagrène interprets Django Reinhardt , among others , he resembles his role model in creativity and phrasing, but also undertakes excursions into other varieties of jazz , Latin American musical styles and classical music. In the tradition of the Sinti or Manouches musicians, Lagrène is a multi-instrumentalist; In addition to the guitar , he is proficient in bass , violin and piano and occasionally plays drums.

Lagrène has worked with the following musicians, among others: Al di Meola , Larry Coryell , John McLaughlin , Vic Juris , Stochelo Rosenberg , Babik Reinhardt , Sylvain Luc , Gil Evans , Leon Redbone , Richard Galliano , Didier Lockwood , Herbie Hancock , Elvin Jones , Jean-Yves Jung and Diz Disley . In addition to his own compositions, his repertoire also includes those from the Sintiswing and modern jazz areas and interpretations of pop and rock songs such as B. Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper , I Shot The Sheriff by Bob Marley and some titles by Jimi Hendrix . He also presents himself as a jazz singer on Blue Eyes . With the Gipsy Project he returned to his roots and worked there with many greats in the scene.

Mike Dregni called the album Gipsy Project & Friends “a true masterpiece” and the line-up (Biréli Lagrène - guitar, Thomas Dutronc - guitar, Holzmanno Lagrène - guitar, Stochelo Rosenberg  - guitar, Hono Winterstein) in his review in Vintage Guitar Magazine from December 2002  - Guitar, Diego Imbert  - double bass, Florin Niculescu  - violin and Henri Salvador  - vocals on piece 7) a “Gypsyjazz lineup made in heaven”. On Djangology / To Bi Or Not To Bi , the double CD released in 2007, Lagrène's solo recordings can be heard for the first time, on the second CD he plays with the WDR Big Band Cologne .
