Florin Niculescu (born February 8, 1967 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian violinist of gypsy jazz . Due to his technique and empathy, he is now considered one of the best violinists of this genre, who has mastered its entire spectrum and continues the tradition of Stéphane Grappelli without restrictions.

Live and act

Niculescu comes from a musical family; his father and uncles played the violin, his sister the cello, and his mother the piano. At the age of four he received his first lessons from his father; at the age of six he continued his education at the Dinu Lipatti music school and then at the Enescu Academy. He was awarded a first prize by the academy and in 1984 with a “special mention” by the jury of the international Wieniawski competition in Ljubljana . He pursued a career as a classical violinist and also performed at family celebrations with his father. At the age of thirteen, after hearing recordings by Grappelli, he also turned to jazz . In 1991 he moved to Paris , where he initially lived without valid papers and appeared in a Russian cabaret. He played with Boulou and Elios Ferré and studied at the Conservatoire de Paris . In 1995 he became a member of the band von Romane . He also began to work with other musicians of the genre such as Jimmy Rosenberg , Angelo Debarre , Tchavolo Schmitt , Andreas Öberg , Frédéric Sylvestre and Mike Reinhardt .

In 1999 he recorded his award-winning album Gypsy Ballad . At the first Django Reinhardt Festival in New York (2000) he performed together with Biréli Lagrène , Babik Reinhardt and Bucky Pizzarelli . In 2001 Lagrène invited him to take part in his Gipsy Project , modeled on the Quintette du Hot Club de France . In the same year he was named “Jazz Talent of the Year” at Midem .

He also worked in France with Charles Aznavour , Françoise Hardy , Patrick Bruel , Johnny Hallyday and Henri Salvador . He was part of Jacques Vidal's quintet . He also played with Oscar Peterson , John McLaughlin , George Benson , Marcel Azzola , Regina Carter , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Wynton Marsalis , Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna .
