Patrick Bruel (born May 14, 1959 in Tlemcen , Algeria as Patrick Benguigui or Maurice Benguigui ) is a French singer , actor and professional poker player . According to a French decree in 2003, Patrick Bruel was officially allowed to take the name Patrick Bruel-Benguigui.

Life

Patrick Bruel's parents Pierre Benguigui and Augusta Kammoun, who divorced in 1960, like almost all Algerian Jews, left Algeria in 1962 after the country gained independence. Patrick Bruel grew up with his mother, who settled in Argenteuil , a suburb of Paris , in the 1960s .

From 2004 to 2007 Patrick Bruel was married to the French writer and film director Amanda Sthers (aka Amanda Maruani) and has two sons with her. He has been in a relationship with the TV presenter Celine Bosquet since 2009.

Bruel has been politically active since the beginning of his career. In the 1980s he supported the organization SOS racisme , in 1995 he postponed planned concerts in places with mayors of the right-wing party Front national in neighboring cities. In 1998 he was awarded the Ordre national du Mérite for his commitment .

His first album, Vide , was unsuccessful in 1981. In 1984 he drew attention to himself with the chanson Marre de cette nana-là , especially with his first television appearance in La Chance aux chansons by Pascal Sevran . His second album came out in 1987, that year he also gave a concert at L'Olympia in Paris . In 1989 his chanson Casser la voix was a great success. With the accompanying album Alors regarde he broke all records in France and amazed the French music world. The first single to be released landed at number one on the charts, the album was sold three million times. In the order of the most successful albums in France since 1968 it ranks fourth. Bruel's concert tour 1990/1991 had over a million listeners.

With his romantic chansons, which were about love, strength and honesty, he hit the nerve of youth, especially women. In France, the Beatles- based term “Bruelmania” was coined due to the behavior of young fans . With more than eight million records sold, Bruel is one of the most successful French-speaking musicians.

Bruel regularly takes part in the annual Enfoirés charity concert , the largest media event in the Francophone world.

In addition to his professional successes, Bruel is also a successful poker player. He won at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas in May 1998 , a bracelet in the variant Limit Hold'em and a cash prize of 224,000 US dollars . In early March 2014, he reached the final table at the main event of the World Poker Tour in Los Angeles and finished fourth, worth more than $ 330,000. In total, Bruel has won over $ 1.5 million in live prize money to date. It is sponsored by the online poker room Winamax .

Bruel occasionally broadcasts the World Poker Tour on the French channel canalplus .
