Secret state affairs (Original title: L'Ivresse du pouvoir ) is a German - French feature film by the director Claude Chabrol . It was shown for the first time on February 16, 2006 at the Berlinale . The film was inspired by the Elf Aquitaine smear money affair and the Norwegian-French judge Eva Joly .

action

Judge Jeanne Charmant-Killman is charged with solving a case of misappropriation of public funds that could bring the CEO of a large corporation to the dock. It gains more and more power by uncovering ever more delicate secrets. The more she has of it, the more pressure she can exert, but at the same time her private life is going through a crisis. She attacks both those involved in the case and her husband Philippe with extreme severity. When she gets into a car accident, bodyguards are put to her side. Jeanne gets more and more problems and almost loses control of her job.

Reviews

“Claude Chabrol's 67th film is a study of human wickedness. A verbose judicial drama without any particular surprises, carried by the convincing leading actress, whose comedic potential admittedly too seldom shines through. "

"In their narcissistic power drama, Chabrol and his proven co-author, the sociologist Odile Barski, conditionally override the rules of the political thriller."

Secret state affairs is a very French film, a piece of speech, staged with restrained elegance, in parts extremely entertaining, if not exactly what is called masterly. In fact, it seems like the script and staging can't quite follow the lead actress. [...] Restrained political satire, which is based on the scandal surrounding the French oil company Elf Aquitaine and, above all, makes Isabelle Huppert look good in the lead role. "
