The innocent with the dirty hands is a film adaptation by Claude Chabrol from 1975 based on the novel "Innocent as a Snake" (Original: The Damned Innocents ) by Richard Neely . Romy Schneider played the main role as femme fatale .
action
After starting an affair with writer Jeff Marle, Julie Wormser introduces the handsome young man to her husband Louis. Jeff now visits the couple regularly. Alcoholic Louis doesn't seem to realize that Julie and Jeff have fallen in love and plan to kill him and live on the great inheritance. One night Julie hits the sleeping Louis on the head with a club. Then Jeff dragged the unconscious man onto his boat to be thrown overboard later at sea.
Commissioner Villon is tasked with investigating the case and after a short time suspects Julie. However, her lawyer, Maître Légal, can convince the judge that the evidence is inconclusive. She will be released again. Soon she has to find out that Jeff was killed in a car accident and that her husband is not dead at all.

Romy Schneider had wanted to work with Chabrol for years and immediately agreed to this film without reading the script. During the filming, which u. a. took place in Elsa Martinelli's villa on the Côte d'Azur , but felt abandoned by him in front of the camera. Chabrol himself later thought the film was one of his weaker works.
The director stated that while writing the script, he had become more and more interested in the role of Julie. He deleted all other female characters from the plot in order to make the theme of women in a man's world clearer: "In this way I was able to move from the misogyny inherent in roman noir to a feminism that, hold on tight, is dear to me."
