Pierre Jansen

Pierre Georges Cornil Jansen (born February 28, 1930 in Roubaix ; † August 13, 2015 in Saint-Pierre-Saint-Jean ) was a French composer who was best known for his collaboration as a film composer with the director Claude Chabrol . He composed the music for over 70 cinema, TV films and mini-series, but also orchestral works, chamber music and pieces for piano solo.

Live and act

Born in 1930 in the French city of Roubaix, Pierre Jansen took courses in piano, harmony and counterpoint at the Conservatory of Music in his hometown, and later also in composition and orchestral studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels under the direction of André Souris . From 1953, additional seminars followed in Germany at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music. In the following years he studied intensively under the supervision of Olivier Messiaen .

In 1958, under the direction of Bruno Maderna, he wrote his first own classical composition, the “Suite Concertante for piano and 14 instruments”. With his versatile musical talent and the classical music repertoire in his luggage, he became an employee at the "Center National de la Recherche Scientifique" in 1959, transcribing lute tablatures for the Corpus des luthistes francais .

In 1960 Jansen met the director Claude Chabrol , and a fruitful collaboration on film music began for over 30 years. Many classics of French film were made, often with a well-rehearsed ensemble of actors such as Serge Bento , Stéphane Audran and Jean Yanne in films such as: 1962: The Woman Murderer of Paris ; 1968: two friends ; 1968: The unfaithful woman ; 1970: The Butcher ; 1973: Bloody wedding ; 1975: the innocent with the dirty hands or 1978: blood relatives

After 1982, the musical collaboration between Chabrol's son Matthieu Chabrol continued until his father's death. Since the beginning of the 1990s, Pierre Jansen only accepted film music assignments sporadically, instead teaching composition at music schools, for example at the Paris Conservatory . Jansen mainly concentrated on his own compositions of classical music.
