“There are only three professions for a man: king, poet and captain ”, says Jean Reichau, unfortunately he is neither king nor poet. And so he just became Capitaine with body and soul. In 1961 he took part in the coup for a French Algeria and spent three years in prison for it. But because there is no other job for him, he now lives on the edge of society, caresses his Russian submachine gun, raves about its accuracy and penetration. With short blond hair and a hooked nose, stocky stature, in a trench coat and with a cigarette in the corner of his mouth, he is the true legionnaire , uses a rough tone, perverts in the tough world of men and is cynical and considerate. The bourgeoisie disgusts him, he would prefer to be in the jungle.

On the last evening of the regiment, the fighters raved about making land fertile and having adventures somewhere far away in the jungle. Now Jean has the opportunity to make a lot of money through a robbery. But when he presented the plan to his comrades of old, they waved it off. They still like to sing the old songs, but Brazil is far away, while Paris, with its secure position and family, is close. The operation is already underway and Capitaine Jean is using it to get revenge on Pierre, a traitor from the days in Algeria, and to fool the girl Yo. She - a cat-type model who spends most of her time flaunting extravagant clothes in provocative poses - had hatched a plan to rob an airplane with mail bags worth five million francs in the air. Yo can be seen on a poster throughout the film; only once is it a different one, namely the movie poster for Jean-Luc Godard's Pierrot le fou , but then Jean dies too, lonely on the beach, shot by police officers.

Reviews

The Protestant film observer does not think much of the film: “Ballad of the lonely warrior, whose penetrating and foolish glorification of the brutal hero is especially dangerous for young people. The lexicon of international films , on the other hand, has a much better opinion of the work : "A formally brilliant fictional film by the former documentarist and Indochinese reporter Schoendoerffer, which, however, falls short of the critical possibilities of its material."
