Marisa Mell (actually Marlies Theres Moitzi ; born February 24, 1939 in Graz ; † May 16, 1992 in Vienna ) was an Austrian actress .

Life

Mell grew up as Marlies Theres Moitzi in Graz. She was enthusiastic about the theater from an early age. She attended the drama school in Graz and then the Max Reinhardt seminar in Vienna. Her grade included Erika Pluhar , Heidelinde Weis and Senta Berger . Because she wanted to be internationally successful, she changed her name to Marisa Mell. After finishing drama school, she married the Swiss Henri Tucci. The marriage lasted only four years. She had her first international success in 1963 in the film French Dressing, directed by Ken Russell . In the same year, she suffered severe facial injuries in a car accident.

In 1968 she landed the lead role in the musical Mata Hari produced by David Merrick and Vincente Minnelli . The planned Broadway success was sold as an absolute flop after its preview in Washington, DC and never reached New York . Marisa's fellow student Senta Berger had previously rejected the role of Mata Hari .

Mell moved to Rome and made films with Marcello Mastroianni and Antonio Sabàto . In 1971 she played alongside Uschi Glas and Petra Schürmann in the last Edgar Wallace film The Riddle of the Silver Crescent , which was only moderately successful. In 1976 she was on the side of Tony Curtis in Casanova & Co. to see. On November 26, 1977, she gave birth to their only child, a daughter named Louisa Erika, in Rome. The premature baby died on the same day, Mell did not disclose the identity of the father.

Mell was mostly used as a “ femme fatale ” and film beauty in her career , for some time she was world famous. But her acting talent was rarely shown in her roles. Over time, the number of films on offer decreased and Mell became impoverished. She moved back to Vienna and played theater sporadically in the last years of her life. In 1990 she published her autobiography Coverlove . Her fellow student and friend Erika Pluhar also wrote a book about Mell after her death: Marisa. Flashbacks of a friendship . The first detailed biography was published in 2013 under the title Die Feuerblume .

She died of esophageal cancer in 1992 at the age of 53 and was buried in the Kahlenbergerdorf parish cemetery in Vienna. In 2000 the Marisa-Mell-Gasse in Vienna- Liesing was named after her.
