Marcello Vincenzo Domenico Mastroianni (born September 28, 1924 in Fontana Liri , † December 19, 1996 in Paris , France ) was an Italian film actor . At the beginning of his career he mostly portrayed fun-loving young men and lovers. Later he embodied the archetype of the crisis-ridden middle-aged man and the artistic " alter ego " of his favorite director Federico Fellini , in whose films he played the leading role several times.

Life

Marcello Mastroianni was born in the town of Fontana Liri near Naples and grew up in Rome and Turin . His father Urbano Mastroianni worked as a carpenter. Mastroianni's mother Ida Irroles came from the middle-class Jewish family of Moissej and Malka Idelson. Ida's parents emigrated from Russia, she herself grew up with strangers in Hamburg, later came to Italy and got married there. Marcello Mastroianni only found out about his Jewish roots in the 1980s.

Mastroianni was a nephew of the sculptor Umberto Mastroianni (1910-1998). Towards the end of the Second World War he was interned by the Wehrmacht , but was able to flee. From 1945 he worked for a film company and took acting lessons. In 1948 he made his debut in the film I miserabili ("The wretched") based on the novel by Victor Hugo .

He achieved international fame with the film Das süße Leben from 1960, in which he played the male lead under Fellini's direction alongside Anita Ekberg . For this he received a prize from the Italian Association of Film Journalists Sindacato Nazionale Giornalisti Cinematografici Italiani .

Mastroianni was married to the actress Flora Carabella from 1948 until his death , with whom he had a daughter. His daughter Chiara Mastroianni comes from his relationship with Catherine Deneuve . Two years after his death, the Marcello Mastroianni Prize was launched, which annually honors the best young actor at the Venice Film Festival .

Marcello Mastroianni died of at the age of 72 years in Paris cancer . He was buried in the Cimitero Campo Verano , the largest cemetery in Rome .
