occupation

The two faces of a woman (original title: Fantasma d'amore ) is a film drama by Dino Risi from 1981. The film is based on a novel by Mino Milani .

action

The lawyer Nino Monti and his wife Teresa lead a regular life that suddenly changes one day when he meets his childhood sweetheart Anna on the bus. Anna looks aged and sick. She asks Nino for 100 lire so that she can pay for the bus.

From then on, Nino's thoughts are determined by Anna. He begins investigating and his friends tell him that Anna died of cancer three years ago . Nino doesn't believe this and starts talking to Anna on the phone and making an appointment. She looks like she used to be and outwardly bears little resemblance to the older and sick Anna from the bus. On a boat trip together, Anna falls into the water and drowns. Nino then calls the police. She starts looking for the corpse in the river. As a result of the incidents, Nino's wife also learns about Anna and leaves their apartment. When Nino apologizes to Anna's husband Conte Zighi for meeting Anna and she has died, Nino cannot follow Nino and rudely informs him that Anna passed away three years ago. The Conte's housekeeper also confirms the statement. Nino begins to doubt his sanity. He goes to the police again and explains that the woman he met was not Anna, but a prostitute. When a body is found in the river, however, it is that of a man who was also Anna's former lover.

In the final scene you can see Nino sitting on a bench. He is in a nursing home and his carer looks the same as Anna.

background

The shooting of the film began in 1980 in Pavia . According to Romy Schneider's then partner Daniel Biasini , filming had to be postponed by three days because Schneider had collapsed due to her alcohol use and drug abuse.

The Two Faces of a Woman celebrated its film premiere in Italy on April 3, 1981 . The film was first broadcast in Germany on May 21, 1982 - eight days before Schneider's death.

criticism

“A film about preserving the ephemeral, especially love; Sensitive, staged in beautiful pictures and well played, however, he only partially meets his artistic demands. "

“The Italian director Dino Risi was able to win Romy Schneider for the lead role for his mystical psychological thriller. His film is a puzzling game about love, death and transitoriness, which many critics at the time criticized as "artificial". If you ignore this weak point, "The Two Faces of a Woman" is convincing with its aesthetic imagery and soulful music. "
