Do you trust Alfredo to commit murder? (Original title: L'assassino ) is an Italian-French film drama directed by Elio Petri from 1961 with Marcello Mastroianni and Salvo Randone in the leading roles.

Alfredo Martelli, a wealthy Roman antique dealer, does not come home until early in the morning. While he is still freshening up, several police officers suddenly stand in front of the door and take him to the police station without giving an exact reason. There, after being kept waiting for a while, he is confronted with the death of Adalgisa De Matteis, his former girlfriend. Martelli is shocked, but Inspector Palumbo thinks the bon vivant is the murderer of the older woman.
In fact, Martelli reacts increasingly nervous and seems to get caught up in contradictions, also because it is becoming increasingly clear how selfish and selfish he was towards his former girlfriend. Martelli, cornered and scared of the police, loses all sovereignty and begins to regret his life, but when the police find out he is innocent, he immediately reverts to his old patterns.

Apart from two short films, did you trust Alfredo to commit murder? the beginning of Elio Petri's work as a director, after he had already written a large number of screenplays in the 1950s and worked as an assistant director, mostly in collaboration with Giuseppe De Santis .
