Elio Petri

Elio Petri (born January 29, 1929 in Rome , † November 10, 1982 ibid) was an Italian film director and screenwriter .

Life

Petri was initially a film critic and in the late 1940s the organizer of the cultural activities of the Italian Communist Party . In the early 1950s he began to write screenplays, was active as a documentary filmmaker and worked as an assistant director for Giuseppe De Santis . In 1961 he got the chance to make his directorial debut. With Dare Alfredo a murder? he was also invited to the competition at the 1961 Berlinale . After several commissions, including the interesting by Robert Sheckley incurred The tenth victim , he took in 1967 with his film Two coffins on order at the Film Festival in Cannes in 1967 in part and there received the award for best screenplay. At the 1970 Cannes International Film Festival he received the Special Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize for his film Investigations against a Citizen Above Suspicion . In 1972 he was able to win the main prize of the Cannes festival, the Grand Prix , with The Path of the Working Class to Paradise . The film Investigations against a Citizen of the Left Filmmaker who is above suspicion won an Oscar in 1971 in the category of Best Foreign Language Film . His films are often "determined by incurable pessimism, which is enriched with metaphysical thoughts and shown with expressionistic stylistic devices".

Elio Petri died of cancer in 1982.
