Kazım Ersun Yanal (born December 17, 1961 in Izmir ) is a former Turkish soccer player and was last coach of the Turkish first division club Fenerbahçe Istanbul until March 2020 .

Academic career

Yanal studied sports science at Celal Bayar University Manisa and specialized in football . During his studies, he also met his future companions Mesut Bakkal and Tevfik Lav , who assisted him in his later career as an assistant coach and later worked as head coach themselves. After completing his studies, Yanal decided to work as a football coach.

Player career

Yanal played in the Aegean region in various amateur clubs or clubs in the lower Turkish professional leagues in the 1980s . Among other things, he was active for Nazillispor in 1986 .

Coaching career

Denizlispor (1st period)

Yanal began his coaching career in the summer of 1992 at Denizlispor . Here he worked for two years in the youth division and looked after several youth teams in Denizlispors. After the club had achieved promotion to the 1st Lig in the summer of 1994, Yanal was introduced for the coming season as an assistant coach to the professional team and assisted the head coach Ümit Kayıhan . After the team under Kayıhan in the course of the 1994/95 season was always in the lower third of the table, they still achieved relegation at the end of the season. In the second season under Kayıhan, the season 1995/96 , the team showed no progress and was near the end of the season near the relegation zone. Kayıhan resigned after the 28th matchday. After this resignation, the club's management announced that the assistant coach Yanal would look after the team on an interim basis until the end of the season. Yanal scored the necessary points in the remaining game days and so achieved relegation. Among other things, he managed a 4-0 away win against the traditional Istanbul club Beşiktaş Istanbul , which first attracted attention. For the new season, Milorad Mitrović was introduced as head coach, with Yanal starting to work as his assistant coach. After you completed a bad start to the season under this coach and could not book a point in three game days, Mitrović was dismissed and replaced by Yanal. Under Yanal, the team began to collect their first points and gradually approached the non-relegation places. Since the liberation from the relegation places of the club management did not take place quickly enough, Yanal was dismissed after the 12th matchday and replaced by Behzat Çınar . This coach also failed to lead the team out of the relegation zone. Denizlispor hired Melih Garipler towards the end of the season and missed relegation under this coach.

Yeni Salihlispor

Yanal remained after his dismissal at Denizlispor until the end of the 1996/97 season without employment and took over the second division club Yeni Salihlispor for the 1997/98 season . With this club he was in the top half of the table throughout the season and was fourth at the end of the season.

Denizlispor (2nd period)

For the 1998/99 season he left Yeni Salihlispor and took over the league competitor and for the second time his old club Denizlispor. With this club he finished the qualifying round confidently first and thus reached the spring 1999 participation in the promotion round of the 2nd division . In the promotion round you delivered a head-to-head race for the second division championship with Vanspor and Göztepe Izmir . The season ended behind Vanspor with the same number of points as runner-up and after three years of abstinence rose again to the first division . Although the team played very good football even after promotion and was also in a good place in the table, he resigned due to differences of opinion and disagreements with the board in the 1999/00 season. For the 2000/01 season he then took over MKE Ankaragücü, which he led to 6th place in the table this season and even made it to 4th place in the following season. During this time, Ersun Yanal's gameplay began to appear. This is shown by his preference for offensive football, which he promotes and lets play among each of his teams.

Gençlerbirliği Ankara

After these two successful times at Ankaragücü, he was hired by local rival Gençlerbirliği Ankara in the summer of 2002 . His stamp of attacking football could now also be seen in the 2002/03 season at Gençlerbirliği Ankara, the team finished the season in third and thus qualified for the UEFA Cup . The team was also the team with the most goals scored with 76 goals. Gençlerbirliği Ankara lost 3-1 in the cup final against Trabzonspor. The 2003/04 season had not been as successful for the club as the year before, as they finished the season in tenth. As in the previous year, the team lost to Trabzonspor in the cup final, this time 4-0. However, Ersun Yanal managed to get the talk of the town because of his team's performances in the UEFA Cup. So he eliminated teams like Blackburn Rovers (3: 1 and 1: 1), Sporting Lisbon (1: 1 and 3: 0) or AC Parma (1: 0 and 3: 0), all of whom were clear favorites against Gençlerbirliği were seen. The final stop was against the eventual UEFA Cup winners Valencia CF , against whom they failed in extra time after Silver Goal in the round of 16. Gençlerbirliği was the only team to win against Valencia on an international level this season with the win in the first leg (1-0).

Turkish national team

After his position at Gençlerbirliği Ankara, he got his biggest coaching offer to date, that of the Turkish national soccer team. He prepared the Turkish national soccer team for the 2006 World Cup qualification and, after the dismissal of the previous coach Şenol Güneş, wanted to start a change in the Turkish national team, in which he wanted to sort out the older players and develop new forces, which he partly implemented. During the qualification period, however, his relationship with Hakan Şükür was constantly addressed and criticized. The reason for this is not known, at least neither Şükür nor Yanal had given a public opinion on it. Ultimately, the relationship between the two was one of the reasons Yanal announced his resignation after the Kazakhstan game. At the time, the Turkish national football team was in second place behind Ukraine .

Manisaspor

In October 2005 Yanal took over the coaching position at Vestel Manisaspor , which he led to 10th place this season. In the 2006/07 season he started his team very well and the Turkish sports media were already talking about whether this team could become champions. Vestel Manisaspor collected 23 points in the first nine games and were leaders with a six-point gap on second Fenerbahçe Istanbul . However, the fall of the club began from this match day for no apparent reason. They only collected six points in the next ten match days. On the 25th match day, the team was only four points away from a relegation zone. This match day was also the last of Ersun Yanal as coach at Manisaspor. In terms of sport, they had signed a five-year contract with Yanal. It didn't look like the club wanted to part with him despite the sporting failure. However, he resigned in his own name. One reason for this was that the game on matchday 25 between Vestel Manisaspor and Sakaryaspor was abandoned in the first half when the score was 1-1 due to incidents in which the goalkeeper and the goalkeeping coach addressed the referee.

Trabzonspor (1st period)

In November 2007, the Turkish football club Trabzonspor fired Ziya Doğan . Ersun Yanal followed him and finished the season in 6th place. In the 2008/09 season , the club signed many young talents, but also experienced players such as Rigobert Song or Egemen Korkmaz . The first half of the season ended his team tied, but due to the poorer goal difference, on the 2nd place. On April 27, 2009 he announced that he had ended his time as a coach at Trabzonspor.

Eskişehirspor

During the winter break of the 2011/12 season, Michael Skibbe, who had migrated to Hertha BSC, replaced Eskişehirspor . He finished 5th with his team. UEFA excluded the Turkish club Beşiktaş Istanbul from participating in the Europa League for disregarding the UEFA regulations . Bursaspor moved in its place and Eskişehirspor got Bursaspor's place. Eskişehirspor first won against FC St. Johnstone before the team was eliminated by Olympique Marseille . Yanal's team finished the 2012/13 season in 8th place and reached the semi-finals in the Turkish Cup before being eliminated on penalties against eventual cup winners Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Yanal's current contract was terminated on June 25, 2013 by mutual agreement.

Fenerbahçe Istanbul

On June 28, 2013, Yanal signed a one-year contract with Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Yanal took over the club at a very turbulent time and was highly controversial as a coach from the start. The club was the main accused in the manipulation scandal in the early 2010s and was banned from European club competitions for two seasons by UEFA in the summer of 2014 . Since the club had appealed against this ruling to the International Court of Sport (CAS) , the team was allowed to take part in the third qualifying round of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League . Yanal came under strong criticism in the first competitive games of the 2013/14 season. After 1. FC Salzburg was eliminated in the third qualifying round of the Champions League , Yanal's team lost 1-0 to arch-rivals Galatasaray Istanbul in the Turkish Football Supercup and awarded their first title to the arch-rivals. The club then lost 3-2 despite a 2-0 lead in the first match day of the new season against newly promoted Torku Konyaspor and provided the first surprise of the season. As early as next competitive match Yanals team lost in the first leg of the Champions League play-offs Arsenal clearly with 3: 0. After losing the second leg 2-0, Fenerbahçe should take part in the UEFA Europa League . Since the International Court of Sport had in the meantime upheld the judgment of UEFA, this participation was denied to the club. After these developments, criticism of Yanal became louder and louder. After the increasing criticism, the club management strengthened their trust in Yanal. In the following game days of the season, the team performance increased significantly. Arch-rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul took over the lead in the table on matchday five and defended it with minor setbacks until the end of the season. In the meantime, Yanal's team expanded their lead over the table runner-up and closest rival Galatasaray Istanbul to 13 points and secured the championship on matchday 31, three matchdays before the end of the season. In the Turkish Football Cup , Yanal's team was eliminated 1: 2 in front of their home crowd in the 4th main round against second division club Fethiyespor and was therefore also under criticism.

After the successful season, the club management extended Yanal's contract by two years.

In the pre-season preparatory camp for the 2014/15 season, criticism of Yanal increased enormously. In addition to his coaching decisions, his private life was also criticized and he was said to have a bad relationship with the team. The criticism increased significantly after Yanal had bet on a 4-4-2 game system with midfield diamond in the preparation games and his team lost four preparation games as a result.

According to various press reports, the authoritarian ruling club president Aziz Yıldırım ordered a meeting with the team. At the meeting, Yıldırım asked Yanal and his coaching staff to leave him alone with the team. After this meeting, rumors about Yanal's disordered private life began to emerge in the press. Following these rumors, the club's president, Aziz Yıldırım, announced a press conference on August 8, 2014, at which he would comment on the rumors that have recently been circulating. In the press conference, Yıldırım confirmed that he had had a one-on-one interview with the team and then one with Yanal. He supported the coach, but then admonished him because of his disorderly leadership style.

One day after that press conference, Yanal submitted his resignation to Fenerbahçe. The club management confirmed Yanal's resignation in an official press release and thanked him for his services so far.

Trabzonspor (2nd period)

In mid-November 2014, Yanal took over Trabzonspor for the second time in his career, replacing the resigned Vahid Halilhodžić . He signed a one and a half year contract with the Black Sea Club and will receive a total salary of 3.27 million euros for this contract period .

Trabzonspor he led to the end of the season on the 5th place in the table and thus to qualify for the UEFA Europa League . After his club had hired Süleyman Hurma as the new manager for the season , Yanal repeatedly got into disagreements with him regarding the squad planning for the upcoming season. So Yanal called for the sale of players like Kévin Constant and the recruitment of other players.

As a result of the disagreement with Hurma, Yanal resigned from office in early July 2015. According to Hurma's statements, Yanal waived a severance payment, but received a certain sum as a gesture of goodwill.

On October 16, 2017, the club announced that they had terminated their contract with Yanal.
