Ali Sami Yen (born May 20, 1886 in Istanbul , Turkey , † July 29, 1951 in Istanbul) was a Turkish football player , coach and sports official with an Albanian migration background. He was one of the founding members and first president of the traditional Galatasaray Istanbul Association .

family

Yen was born in the Istanbul district of Üsküdar as the son of the writer Sami Frashëri , one of the most important proponents of the Albanian national movement and modern Turkish literature. His father, who called himself Şemseddin Sami in Turkey , was the author of the first Turkish novel Taaşşuk-ı Talat ve Fitnat (1872) and the first Turkish-language encyclopedia Kamus-ül Alam (1889–1898). In contrast to his father, Yen only chose "a Turkish identity".

Player career

Yen studied at the renowned Galatasaray High School . In October 1905, a group of high school students, including Yen, decided to found the sports club of the same name. The goal of this founding group was to play with the team like the English , to have their own name and color. Yen played for Galatasaray from 1905 to 1910 and won the championship of the Istanbul Futbol Ligi , the most prestigious league in the country at the time , with his teammates in the seasons 1908/09 and 1909/10 .

Trainer and functionary career

Yen was also active as a club official from the time Galatasarays was founded and served as club president from 1905 to 1918, and in the meantime in 1925. He was also active as a coach of the club from 1916 to 1917.

From 1926 to 1931 Yen was President of the Turkish National Olympic Committee and in 1923 the first coach of the Turkish national soccer team .

death

Ali Sami Yen died on July 29, 1951 in Istanbul. A funeral march was held at his funeral, attended by many celebrities. His coffin was carried from the club house to the Feriköy cemetery and then buried there.

Trivia

The no longer existing Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu , which served as Galatasaray's home stadium until 2011, was dedicated to him. Since 2011 the sports ground on which the new Galatasaray stadium, the Türk Telekom Arena , is located has been known as Aslantepe Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi ; it is indirectly named after yen.
