Şenol Güneş (born June 1, 1952 in Trabzon ) is a former Turkish football player and current coach .

Player career

Şenol Güneş began his career as a goalkeeper at the Turkish amateur club Erdogdu Gençlik , before he later moved to the first division Trabzonspor . There he was in goal for 15 years and between 1975 and 1984 won the Turkish championship title six times and the Turkish Cup three times.

Coaching career

After his career as a player Güneş started as an assistant coach at his home club Trabzonspor and was then appointed head coach in 1994. After he had missed the championship with Trabzonspor in 1996, he left the club and then trained Boluspor , İstanbulspor , then again Trabzonspor and later Antalyaspor and Sakaryaspor .

In 2000 he was appointed Turkish national coach to succeed Mustafa Denizli . After his team took second place in the table in the 2002 World Cup qualification, Turkey qualified again for a World Cup after 48 years. In the due relegation game, Austria was beaten 5-0. At the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan , he made it to the semi-finals with the Turkish national soccer team and won the match for third place. In 2003, his team also took third place in the Confed Cup .

When his team in November 2003 by a defeat in the relegation game against the Latvians , the qualification for the Euro 2004 , missed Güneş was dismissed. He then trained Trabzonspor a third time from 2004 to 2005. After poor performance of his team, the dismissal followed again. Since then he has been under contract with South Korean FC Seoul as a coach.

On December 1, 2009, Şenol Güneş signed a 3.5-year contract again with Trabzonspor. In May 2010, the team won the Turkish Cup competition with a 3-1 win in the final against Fenerbahçe Istanbul under his leadership . Three months later in August, he managed to win another title: the Turkish Supercup. Trabzonspor won 3-0 against the then reigning Turkish champions Bursaspor . He resigned on January 28, 2013 after a series of disappointing results. The club's management accepted his resignation and a few days later presented the former player Tolunay Kafkas as Güneş's successor.

After leaving Trabzonspor, Güneş declared that he wanted to rest for at least a year and would therefore not accept any offers. After this period he agreed with the first division club Bursaspor for a cooperation and signed a one-year contract here. After the season there was no extension of his contract with Bursaspor and Güneş signed a two-year deal with Beşiktaş Istanbul . With Beşiktaş he won the Süper Lig in the 2015/16 and 2016/2017 seasons .

After the end of the 2018/19 season , Güneş will hold the position of head coach of the Turkish national team for the second time .
