Antalyaspor Kulübü , or Antalyaspor for short , is a Turkish football club from Antalya . Due to its former main sponsor Medical Park , which at times also emerged as a name sponsor, the association was called Medical Park Antalyaspor from 2010 to 2014 . The club played a total of 20 seasons in the Süper Lig in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s and is in 17th place in the all-time table of the Süper Lig . Since their promotion in 2015, Antalyaspor has been back in the Süper Lig in the newly built Antalya Stadyumu .

history

The club was founded in the summer of 1966 as Antalya Spor through a merger of the local clubs Yenikapı Su Spor, İlk Işık Spor and Ferrokrom Spor . Antalyaspor played in the first Turkish league for 13 years. Antalyaspor played professionally from the 1966/67 season in the 2nd division . In the 1981/82 season, the club became champions and rose to the Süper Lig. After three seasons he was relegated back to the 2nd division. After just one year, the club rose again, but after only one season back into the 2nd division. After the club had played seven seasons in the second division, he rose again in the 1993/94 season. The team was able to hold eight seasons in the Süper Lig until they were relegated again in the 2001/02 season. In the 2005/06 season she was in the Ikinci Lig (Lig A) second behind Bursaspor and rose again to the Süper Lig.

After only one season, the red and whites went back to the second class. In the 2007/08 season , the direct rise behind Kocaelispor succeeded . Since the 2008/09 season , the club played in the Turkcell Süper Lig. In the 2010/11 season, Antalyaspor and the hospital chain Medical Park agreed on a name sponsorship . For example, the association carried the temporary name extension Medical Park in its name during the term of the contract .

Relegation after six years in the Süper Lig

In the first division season 2013/14 the club started with a coach change and replaced the head coach Mehmet Özdilek , who had resigned at the end of last season, who had coached the club for five seasons, with the veteran Samet Aybaba . Under this new coach, the team had a mixed start to the season and was always in the lower third of the table or in the lower half of the table until the winter break. Even after the winter break there was no improvement and so the team slipped more and more towards relegation ranks. After the home game of the 24th matchday against the direct relegation rivals Çaykur Rizespor with 1: 2 was lost, Aybaba resigned from his office. The club's management reacted quickly to this resignation and hired the Belgian Turk Fuat Çapa to succeed him . Under this coach, the team did not show the hoped-for turnaround in their performance. Although two draws were achieved in the first two match days, the team did not manage to collect the necessary points in the following days. On the 32nd matchday, the club slipped through the 1: 2 home defeat against direct relegation rivals Çaykur Rizespor to the bottom of the table and was together with the penultimate Kayserispor as the first relegated of the season.

In the summer of 2014 and immediately after relegation from the Süper Lig, the name sponsorship agreement with Medical Park was terminated, so that the club was henceforth referred to only as Antalyaspor .

Direct promotion back to the Süper Lig

After relegation from the Süper Lig, the club remained without leadership for a while. Finally, Gültekin Gencer was elected as the new club president . This hired Engin Korukır as the new head coach, ensured the retention of most of the top performers and strengthened the team with several seasoned first division players. Under this new leadership, the team played for the table lead from the beginning of the second division season 2014/15 and took it over on matchday five. After the league leadership was lost after two days and the team could not show the expected consistency the following game days, the club management dismissed Korukır after the 9th match day and replaced him with Hami Mandıralı . Under this coach, the team retained the lead in the table, but could not take it over and ended the first half of the season in 3rd place in the table. After the team was defeated 1: 2 at home on the 20th matchday, the 3rd matchday of the second half of the financially weakened club Orduspor, consisting only of players from the reserve team, the club management dismissed Mandıralı. The team had defeated the first leg away against an Orduspor with ideal cast 4-1. On Mandıralı followed with Yusuf Şimşek a coach of the league rivals Karşıyaka SK . This attitude caused a lot of criticism, as it appeared that Antalyaspor recruited a coach who was still in service from the league rivals. Şimşek resigned from his post on the same day he was hired at Antalyaspor bei Karşıyaka. Under this coach, the team finished the season in fifth place. With this placement, the direct promotion to the Süper Lig was missed, but participation in the play-offs, in which the last promoted player was played, qualified. In the semifinals, the team prevailed against Adana Demirspor . Antalyaspor won the first semi-final 3-0. The second leg took place in a very tense atmosphere and was lost 2-0, which meant that Antalyaspor rose to the final. Immediately after the game, a scuffle broke out in which several Demirspor players attacked Antalyaspor's players. The Turkish Football Association's Disciplinary Committee found Demirspor guilty and imposed several penalties on the club and some of its players. The subsequent final against Samsunspor went into extra time and then had to be decided by penalty shoot-out after a score of 2: 2. Şimşek's team beat Samsunspor 4-1 on penalties and returned to the Süper Lig after just one season.

European Cup balance sheet

Antalyaspor qualified as a cup finalist for the 2000/01 season for the UEFA Cup . The team won the first leg in the first round at home against Werder Bremen 2-0, but had to admit defeat 6-0 in the second leg. Getting into the UEFA Cup was also one of the greatest successes in the club's history.
