Birol Pekel (* 1938 in Istanbul ; † February 7, 2004 there ) was a Turkish soccer player , coach, official, actor and former basketball player . Through his long-standing activities for Beşiktaş Istanbul and Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is very strongly associated with these clubs and viewed by both clubs as one of their most legendary players. He was an important part of the Beşiktaş team that won the Turkish championship for the first time and part of the Fenerbahçe team that won the Turkish championship twice in a row for the first time. In addition, in the 1967/68 season he was a member of the team that won the first Turkish double in club history. Pekel was always mentioned together with his long-time teammate Şenol Birol and played with him at Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe and Rizespor. Pekel was considered to be Birol's most important template. The offensive duo was so successful and popular that the fans composed the fan song in the rhyme form Şenol-Birol gol (meaning: Şenol! Birol! Ein Tor! ) For them. In 1965 he played the supporting role in a feature film that was named after the fan rhyme.

Player career

society

Pekel was born in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul , the home district of the Turkish sports club Fenerbahçe Istanbul , as one of three children in the family. As a teenager he attended the renowned İstanbul Ticaret Lisesi (German: Istanbul Commercial High School ) and made the acquaintance of club sports here. After word of his sporting talent got around, he was hired as a basketball player by the Istanbul club Beylerbeyi SK . While working for Beylerbeyi, Pekel was approached by Hakkı Yeten , a former football player and club official of Beşiktaş Istanbul , about his talent and suggested that he would be more successful at football. Following this advice from Yeten, Pekel began to play for the Beylerbeyis soccer team and also asserted himself in this sport. According to another source, he also played for Sarıyer GK .

From Beylerbeyi SK he moved to Beşiktaş Istanbul in early July 1959 for a transfer fee of 20,000 Turkish Lira . With his new club, Pekel played in the Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig). This league was founded in the spring of 1959 as the first nationwide national league in Turkey and replaced the regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, such as B. the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German Istanbul Professional League ), as the highest and only Turkish league. Pekel established himself at Beşiktaş straight away as a regular player and top performer. His club took over the championship lead and finished the season as Turkish champions , as 2nd Turkish champions. Birol was one of the squad that won the first championship for Beşiktaş. Birol formed the Beşiktaş offensive with his teammates Ahmet Özacar , Arif Özataç , Nazmi Bilge and Şenol Birol , contributed to this title with 14 league goals and several assists, making him the second most successful goalscorer of his team behind Özataç. Even in this season, the Turkish trade press highlighted Pekel's interaction with Şenol Birol. Birol was to play with Pekel for several years and be remembered as his most important goal provider. In the next three seasons Beşiktaş missed the championship, Pekel himself played against his first season for Beşiktaş from then on as left winger or in left midfield and gradually established himself as one of the best assists in the league. The 1963/64 season ended his team as runner-up.

Even before the end of the 1962/63 season, arch-rival Fenerbahçe Istanbul expressed interest in Pekel and especially his strike partner Şenol Birol. Since both teams were still in the championship fight, this recruitment attempt by Fenerbahçe caused a scandal. In return, the Beşiktaş officials said they would also sign some Fenerbahçe players. This club, however, unswervingly negotiated with the two players and reached an agreement with both. Both players have come under increasing criticism due to the last three untitled seasons and were therefore not averse to a change. Beşiktaş, under the leadership of club president Hakkı Yeten, refused to give the two players a handover and stressed that they would only let the strikers move for a transfer fee of 100,000 Turkish lira each. After these developments, Galatasaray Istanbul waited for the end of the season and offered Beşiktaş 100,000 lira for the two strikers. Fenerbahçe reacted more quickly and signed Pekel at the beginning of July 1963 and Birol a day later. Since no agreement had been reached with Beşiktaş on this move, this club declared the contracts invalid and announced legal action. After several weeks of waiting, the Turkish Football Association got involved , declared the transfer to be legal and obliged Fenerbahçe to pay Beşiktaş a transfer fee of 162,000 lira. At his new club, Pekel immediately established himself as a regular player. He finished the season with Fenerbahçe before his old club Beşiktaş as Turkish champions. Pekel has scored four league goals and set up a number of goals this season. The following season 1964/65 he managed to defend the championship title with his team, the first in the club's history.

In the summer of 1966, Fenerbahçe sold Pekel's longstanding strike partner. Pekel himself played for Fenerbahçe for two seasons, but remained more of a supplementary player during this time and only came to sporadic appearances. In the 1967/68 season he and his team won the Turkish championship and the Turkish Cup for the third time . As a result, Pekel was also part of the Fenerbahçes squad that won the first double in club history. In April 1968, Pekel was suspended from the team squad by his head coach Ignác Molnár .

After Pekel was suspended at Fenerbahçe, he moved to third division Rizespor in the summer of 1968 , following his long-time strike partner Şenol Birol . He had been hired as a player- coach at the club in his home town of Rize and one of his first acts was to bring Pekel to his team.

On June 21, 1969, Pekel ended his career with a farewell meeting in which Fenerbahçe played against a national team.

National team

Pekel began his national team career in September 1958 with a use for the Turkish U-18 national team.

In June 1960 he was nominated by the national coach Ignác Molnár as part of a friendly against the Scottish national team for the first time for the squad of the Turkish national team and made his international debut in this encounter. By September 1964, he was used in nine other senior international matches and scored one goal.

He also played four games between 1960 and 1962 for the Turkish B national team, the second selection of the Turkish national team at the time, and scored one goal.

Trainer, sports journalist and functionary career

In the summer of 1975, Pekel took over the second division team Antalyaspor as head coach and trained them for four months.

He then began working as a sports journalist for the daily newspaper Hürriyet . In addition to his journalistic activities, he also worked as a club official at Fenerbahçe. In September 1987 he took over the interim head coach position of Fenerbahçe for a game and handed it over to the new head coach Pál Csernai .

Pekel was also on the board of Fenerbahçes (Turkish: Yüksek Divan Kurulu) and remained a member of the board until his death.
