Ignác Molnár or Ignáce Molnár (born October 1, 1901 in Budapest , † March 9, 1986 in Vienna ) was a Hungarian football player and coach. He worked a large part of his coaching career in Turkey and is one of the most important coaches in Turkish football in general and for Fenerbahçe Istanbul in particular due to his successes . With this club he was twice Istanbul football champion and twice Turkish champion . He also helped the club to win its first Turkish double and its first Turkish Cup . Fenerbahçe was also the first Turkish champion with him and he himself was the first master coach of the Süper Lig .

Player career

Molnár's footballing career is only partially illuminated. He played for Bocskai FC until 1924 and then moved to the Italian league for Vicenza Calcio . After he had worked for this club for one season, he was hired within the league at FC Rome . Molnár's further football career is not further documented.

Coaching career

Molnár started to work as head coach in the Netherlands in the early 1930s and until 1939 looked after various clubs such as Willem II Tilburg , XerxesDZB , Quick Den Haag and RFC Rotterdam . Only between 1934 and 1936 did he work with Royal Antwerp at a Belgian club. In 1939 he took over the Italian club FC Turin , but left it a little later after the outbreak of the Second World War .

From the spring of 1947 he began to work in Turkey and his first activity was the traditional club Fenerbahçe Istanbul . With this club he played in the Millî Eğitim Kupası (German: Cup of the Ministry of Education of Turkey ) and finished this tournament in second behind arch-rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul . In the new season Molnár took part with Fenerbahçe in the İstanbul Futbol Ligi (German: Istanbul Football League ). At the time of his first employment with Fenerbahçe, there was no cross-national professional league in Turkey. Instead, regional leagues existed in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which the Istanbul Football League was considered the most prestigious. In the 1947/48 season of this league , Molnár Fenerbahçe led undefeated and with only one draw to the Istanbul championship. With this successful debut in Turkish football, the Turkish Football Association offered the head coach position for the Turkish national team . Molnár accepted the offer, in addition to his tenure at Fenerbahçe and should the Turkish football team during the Olympic Games in 1948 serve. Immediately before the start of the tournament, Molnár quit both his work for the Turkish national team and his work at Fenerbahçe and left the country for reasons that were not discussed in more detail. During the tournament, Turkey looked after Ulvi Yenal on an interim basis instead of Molnár .

After nine years of abstinence, Molnár returned to Turkey and took over Fenerbahçe for the second time. In the meantime, the İstanbul Futbol Ligi was transferred to the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ), while all well-known clubs took part in this league from then on. Molnár Fenerbahçe also looked after in this league and reached the runner-up in the 1957/58 season behind arch-rivals Galatasaray Istanbul . In the next and very last season of this league, the 1958/59 season , Molnár's team led Galatasaray for a long time head-to-head for the last Istanbul championship. Finally, Fenerbahçe prevailed unbeaten and with four draws as champions and was the last title holder of this league. From the spring of 1959, Molnár and Fenerbahçe took part in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig). This replaced all regional leagues as the highest superordinate league in Turkish professional football. The first season of the Millî Lig was played from February 1959 to June 1959. Molnár achieved the first title of this league with his team, making his club the first Turkish champion and Molnár himself as the first master coach to go down in the annals. In the second season, Molnár stayed only the first half of the season at Fenerbahçe and was replaced by his compatriot László Székely for the second half . Molnár had experienced controversies with some club officials in the summer of 1959 and was urged by club president Agah Erozan to apologize publicly for his behavior. According to Erozan, Molnár had internally rejected an offer to extend his contract, but behaved differently towards the media and sparked rumors in order to raise his salary. Molnár, in turn, had stated that there would be no cause for apology. After all, both sides had chosen to work together. In January 1960, Molnár was given a month's leave of absence from the club's board after a friendly defeat against Sparta Prague . After this compulsory leave of absence , Esat Kaner was appointed as interim trainer and the possibility of terminating his contract with Molnár was not excluded. Eventually, Molnár's contract was terminated and Székely was introduced as the new coach.

From the summer of 1959, Molnár had taken over the second selection of the Turkish national team, the B national team, in parallel to his work at Fenerbahçe. In September he was finally appointed coach of the Turkish national team for the second time in his career. He also did this job until January 1960, parallel to his work at Fenerbahçe and then only coached the national team. After a single test match against the Scottish national team , Molnár stopped working for the national team.

In 1960 he accepted Hapoel Petah Tikva's offer and began to continue his coaching career in Israel . In the fall of 1961, Molnár Maccabi Tel Aviv began to train and this activity continued until the end of the season. For the 1962/63 season he left Israel and reached an agreement for the upcoming season with the Austrian club Austria Salzburg . As one of his first official activities with the Austrians, he signed his former goalkeeper Şükrü Ersoy from Fenerbahçe. After a year Molnár left this club again.

For the 1965/66 season Molnár finally returned to Turkey and took over the first division club Vefa Istanbul . In February 1966 he announced his resignation at Vefa. A short time after this resignation Molnár took over the second division Altınordu Izmir . He led this club until the end of the season to runner-up and thus to promotion to the 1st league . Despite this success he left Altınordu for the new season and was traded as the new coach of the Turkish national team.

In February 1967 he agreed to work at Feriköy SK . However, this cooperation did not materialize. Instead, Molnár vied for the head coach post at his former club Fenerbahçe, although there was already a head coach with Abdulah Gegić . For the new season he was finally introduced as the new head coach of this club and was in charge of this club for the third time. Molnár's team got off to a successful start in the new season and won the title in the pre-season competition of the Spor Toto Cup . In the league, Molnár and his team took over the table lead relatively early and led them to the Turkish championship at the end of the season . In addition to this championship, he won the first Turkish Cup title in the club's history and thus also the first double in the club's history. By winning the double, Fenerbahçe won the President's Cup , which was played between the champions and the cup winners, without playing an encounter . Molnár also won the Balkans Cup with Fenerbahçe . In the new season, Molnár met the reigning English champions Manchester City with Fenerbahçe in the European Cup . Molnár's team went into the game as a blatant underdog and fought 0-0 in the first leg in Manchester. In the second leg, Fenerbahçe defeated Manchester City 2-1 in front of their home crowd and caused a big surprise by progressing. The next round you finally met Ajax Amsterdam and were eliminated against the Dutch. After Molnár could not win the title in all national competitions, he was replaced by the Romanian Traian Ionescu after the 24th matchday .

For the new season, Molnár agreed with the second division Adanaspor . With this club he played for the entire season for the second division championship. After this goal could no longer be achieved, he left the southern Turkish club in early May 1970. For the next season, Molnár negotiated with Beşiktaş Istanbul , but could not agree on a cooperation with this club. Thereupon he returned to his adopted home Salzburg and waited here for possible offers from Turkey. Here he ran a boutique with his wife , but signaled via the media that he would be able to work as head coach again in Turkey if there were suitable offers.

death

In early 1986, Molnár's health deteriorated. So he had to be taken to a Viennese hospital for treatment . He succumbed to his illness on March 9, 1986.
