The Scottish national soccer team represents the British part of Scotland and is, alongside the English national soccer team, the oldest national soccer team in the world. It reports to the Scottish Football Association , the leading football association in Scotland.
history
The first international match of a Scottish selection was also the first official international match in the history of football : The game between a Scottish and an English selection led by Cuthbert Ottaway , which took place on November 30, 1872 at Hamilton Crescent in what is now Partick , part of Glasgow , ended In front of around 4,000 spectators with 0-0. The Scottish team consisted exclusively of players from Queen's Park Football Club , the oldest football club in Scotland, which was founded on July 9, 1867.
From 1883 Scotland participated in the British Home Championship , which had been won 41 times by the end of the annual tournament in 1984. In 1929 the Scots played for the first time against a team outside the United Kingdom ; until then they had only played against the teams from England, Wales and Ireland . The game against Norway ended 7-3 for Scotland.
Participation in soccer world championships
Scotland took part in eight finals, but never made it through the preliminary round and thus leads the ranking of the elimination in the first round . Scotland were the first team to go undefeated at a World Cup (1974). They met Brazil in four finals . Alongside the encounter between France and Mexico, this is the most frequent pairing in the preliminary round in World Cup history. 1986 saw the fastest dismissal in the game against Uruguay (final score 0-0): José Batista from Uruguay was sent off after 56 seconds by referee Joël Quiniou . Uruguay is also the opponent against whom Scotland suffered their biggest defeat to date: In 1954 the Scots lost 7-0 to the then reigning world champions.

- ↑ In its statistics, the SFA separates the games against Germany (1930–1938 and from 1991) and West Germany (1954–1990).
- ↑ a b The SFA does not differentiate between Ireland and Northern Ireland in its statistics, all games are listed under Northern Ireland. In the FIFA statistics from October 20, 1923, and in the RSSSF statistics from February 26, 1921, a distinction is made between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
