Edward Colin Hendry (born December 7, 1965 in Keith , Scotland ) is a retired Scottish football player .

Career

As a player

In the club

Hendry first played as a striker for smaller local clubs in Keith before starting his professional career in 1983 with FC Dundee in the Scottish Premier League . In 1987 he moved to England for the Blackburn Rovers , where he was retrained as a defender. Here he played over 100 games before he was signed by Manchester City in 1989 . After the appointment of the new coach Peter Reid, he returned to his old club Blackburn with its new coach Kenny Dalglish and won the English championship in 1995.

In 1998 Hendry was signed by Dick Advocaat for the Glasgow Rangers for £ 4m; there he was loaned by Advocaat to Coventry City , Bolton Wanderers , Preston North End and Blackpool FC before retiring.

In the national team

Hendry was also a successful Scottish international . Although he was only appointed to the selection at the age of 27, he played 51 games and took part as captain in the 1996 European Football Championship and the 1998 World Cup. Hendry is a member of the Scotland Football Hall Of Fame .

As a trainer

In June 2004 Hendry took a job as coach of Blackpool FC , but was dismissed in November 2005 due to unsuccessfulness. Most recently he was employed by the Scottish club FC Clyde , but resigned there on January 18, 2008 for family reasons.
