Dirk Nicolaas "Dick" Advocaat (born September 27, 1947 in The Hague ) is a Dutch football coach and former player.
Career as a player
Dick Advocaat started his career at ADO Den Haag . He played there until 1973 and then moved to Roda Kerkrade . In 1977 he signed with VVV Venlo , only to move to the United States two years later , as he accepted the Chicago Sting's offer to play for this club in the North American Soccer League .
Advocaat made a short-term return to the Netherlands in the 1979/80 season to play for The Hague again, but moved back to Chicago at the end of the season. From 1980 to 1982 he was under contract with Sparta Rotterdam , in the 1982/83 season with Berchem Sport , a club from Belgium . After a year at FC Utrecht , he ended his career.
Career as a coach
Advocaat started out in 1981 as a trainer for Door Samenwerking Verkregen Pijnacker (DSVP). In 1984 he became assistant coach to Rinus Michels for the Dutch national soccer team .
From 1987 to 1989 he coached HFC Haarlem , then FC Dordrecht .
From 1992 he was again assistant coach of Rinus Michels for the Dutch national team. When Michels resigned after the European Championships in 1992 - they lost in the semifinals against eventual tournament winners Denmark - Advocaat took over the post as bond coach until 1994. He reached the quarter-finals with her at the 1994 World Cup .
From 1995 to 1998 he was the coach of PSV Eindhoven , was cup winner in 1996 and champion in 1997. From 1998 to 2001 he coached the Glasgow Rangers , with whom he became champions and cup winners in 1999 and 2000.
From 2002 to 2004, Advocaat was again a bond coach . In the 2004 European Football Championship , the Netherlands reached the semi-finals, but then knocked out by Portugal from.
After being between November 2004 and April 2005, Borussia Moenchengladbach in the 1. Bundesliga had cared, he was from July to September 2005 coach of the United Arab Emirates national football team , this place left but ahead of time to October 2005 to June 2006, the South Korean national team to work out.
In July 2006 Advocaat Zenit took over St. Petersburg and one year later became Russian champion. He won the UEFA Cup with Zenit in the 2007/08 season. On August 10, 2009, he was released early.
It was planned that Advocaat would take over as coach of the Belgian national team from January 2010 , but when the transition coach Franky Vercauteren resigned, it was agreed that Advocaat would take over from October 2009. He was the first foreign coach since the Hungarian Géza Toldi .
In December 2009, while working for the Belgian national team, Advocaat was also the coach of the Dutch first division club AZ Alkmaar . He took over the coaching post from Ronald Koeman until the end of the season. On April 15, 2010 Advocaat announced his resignation as coach of the Belgian national football team. A month later he was introduced as the new coach of the Russian national team. He received a contract that ran until the 2014 World Cup . At the end of April 2012, he announced that he would resign after the 2012 European Championships. The European Championships in Poland and Ukraine ended for the Russians with the elimination after the preliminary round.
For the 2012/13 season he took over PSV Eindhoven again after 14 years , but announced the end of his engagement at the end of the season after the defeat in the cup final against league rivals AZ Alkmaar on May 9, 2013. From October 16, 2013 he was again the coach of the then opponent AZ; he left the club at the end of the 2013/14 season.
On August 1, 2014, he became the coach of the Serbian national team and his contract should run until the end of the 2016 European Championship. After Serbia lost 3-1 to Denmark in the European Championship qualifier on November 14, 2014, Advocaat resigned after four games (including the abandoned game against Albania).
On March 17, 2015, Advocaat became a coach at Sunderland AFC . After securing relegation with the club, he announced on May 27, 2015 that he would leave the club at the end of the season and end his coaching career. Eight days later, however, he extended his contract term in Sunderland by one year to the end of June 2016; later he assessed this decision positively. On October 4, 2015, Advocaat resigned because he assessed the Sunderland team "simply not good enough" for relegation again and the club management had left him in the dark about the amount of financial resources to strengthen the squad.
On August 17, 2016, the Turkish first division club Fenerbahçe presented Istanbul Advocaat as the successor to Vítor Pereira . On March 19, 2017, he announced the end of his coaching career at the end of the 2016/17 season.
In June 2017 Advocaat became the coach of the Dutch national team for the third time. After the team had not reached the final of the 2018 World Cup , the contract was terminated in November.
On December 26, 2017, the first division club Sparta Rotterdam introduced him as a new coach. Advocaat received a contract that ran until the end of the season.
He then worked at FC Utrecht and since October 30, 2019 at Feyenoord Rotterdam .
