society

René Vandereycken began his professional career in 1971 with the Belgian lower class club KSC Hasselt . In the summer of 1974, the former midfielder moved to the top Belgian club FC Bruges . In seven years in Bruges, he won the championship with the team in 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1980. With the cup success in 1977 they made the double perfect this season . Vandereycken was also able to win the last national title for his collection when he won the Super Cup in 1980.

For the 1981/82 season, the Belgian moved to CFC Genoa , the then Italian promoted to Serie-A . With the 13th place the team secured the league. However, Vandereycken did not make the breakthrough and in 1983 he moved back to Belgium for RSC Anderlecht . There he had another three successful years and was Belgian champion with the team in 1985 and 1986. In the 1986/87 season Vandereycken tried again abroad and signed with the then Bundesliga club Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin . He made his debut in Germany's top division on the 11th matchday against FC Bayern Munich on October 18, 1986. After the relegation of Berlin, the midfielder decided to go to Belgium again and joined KAA Gent . Two years later he ended his active professional career.

National team

Vandereycken took part as a player with the Belgian national team in the 1980 European Championship , the 1982 World Cup , the 1984 European Championship and the 1986 World Cup.

In 1980 the team reached the final of the European Championship, but had to admit defeat to Germany 1: 2. After Horst Hrubesch's 1-0 win in the 10th minute, Vandereycken equalized with a penalty in the 76th minute before Hrubesch scored the final score again.

At the European Championship 1984, the Belgian team was eliminated after the preliminary round. At the 1982 World Cup they reached the second round, four years later the semi-finals were not over until the team failed against Argentina 2-0. The game for third place was lost 4-2 after extra time against France .

In October 1993 he moved to Standard Liège . But after a year it was over and Vandereycken was replaced by Robert Waseige . He signed with the lower class RWD Molenbeek club . There he was active until 1997 when his former club RSC Anderlecht hired him, where he inherited Johan Boskamp . After a short time he was replaced by Arie Haan . After a three-year break, Vandereycken was the coach of 1. FSV Mainz 05 for 13 games from June 1, 2000 to November 14, 2000 . After a bad start, however, he was quickly released. Before that, he led the team into the UEFA Cup when they beat Standard Liège in the qualifying matches. From January 1, 2006 to April 7, 2009 he was the national coach of Belgium. Seven days before his release, the team lost 2-1 in the qualifying game for the 2010 World Cup against Bosnia-Herzegovina . It was the third competitive defeat in a row for his team and the qualification was a long way off. In 2008 he and his team missed the European Championship. The soccer coach has been without a club since then.
