Countries participating in the 2010 World Cup:
Countries that have qualified to participate
Countries that did not qualify
countries not participating in the qualification process
For the qualification (or preliminary round) for the Soccer World Cup 2010 , in addition to hosts South Africa, 204 other associations had registered their national teams ; this represented a new record of participation. Only Laos , Brunei and the Philippines did not send their teams. In addition, the report from Papua New Guinea was only submitted after the reporting deadline, so that it could no longer be considered.
Regulations
As usual, the hosts - this time South Africa - were automatically seeded for the finals. This time, the future World Cup host will nevertheless play the qualification, because it also served as qualification for the 2010 African Cup in Angola. South Africa did not have to pass the qualification in terms of sport in order to get a starting place for the 2010 World Cup in its own country, the same applied to Angola in terms of the African Cup of Nations.
The Central African Republic , Eritrea as well as São Tomé and Príncipe (all African countries), Guam and Bhutan (both Asia) withdrew their participation after the report. Montenegro (Europe), Comoros (Africa), Myanmar and East Timor (Asia) took part in a World Cup qualification for the first time. In the end, a total of 200 teams played for 32 World Cup starting places.
The starting places for the final round were allocated as follows:
-
UEFA ( Europe ): 13 starting places for 53 qualifying participants
-
CAF ( Africa ): 6 starting places (with host South Africa) for 50 qualifying participants (3 of 53 registered teams did not take part in the qualification)
-
AFC ( Asia ): 4 or 5 starting places for 41 qualification participants (Guam and Bhutan did not take part in the qualification)
-
OFC ( Oceania ): 0 or 1 starting place for 11 qualifying participants
-
CONMEBOL ( South America ): 4 or 5 starting places for 10 qualifying participants
-
CONCACAF ( North and Central America and the Caribbean ): 3 or 4 starting places for 35 qualifying participants
There was a play-off between the CONMEBOL-fifth and the CONCACAF-fourth in the 4th round after the completion of the respective qualifying rounds , as well as between the winner of the play-off between the two third-placed in the groups of the AFC qualification and the winner of the OFC qualification.
The drawing of the groups for the qualification in Europe, North and Central America, Asia and Africa took place on November 25, 2007 in Durban . The selection of the group heads as well as the further allocation of the lottery pots was based on the FIFA seeding list for soccer world championships (AFC) and the FIFA world rankings (UEFA, CONCACAF and CAF).
The rankings in each group were determined as follows in accordance with Article 17, Paragraph 6 of the regulations:
- a) Number of points from all group matches
- b) Goal difference from all group matches
- c) Number of goals scored in all group matches
If two or more teams finished tied on these criteria, their placement was determined according to the following criteria:
- d) Number of points from direct encounters between teams with the same number of points in group matches
- e) Goal difference from the direct encounters of the teams with the same points in the group matches
- f) Number of goals scored in group matches between teams with equal points
- g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organizing Committee
Provided the FIFA Organizing Committee gave the appropriate approval and the coordinated international match calendar permitted, the decision could also be determined through playoffs instead of drawing lots. In the event of a tie after 90 minutes, there will be an extension of 15 minutes twice. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner will be determined in a penalty shoot-out.
For qualifying games with a home and return leg, the following applies: If both teams have scored the same number of goals after the games, the team with the higher number of away goals qualifies. If both teams have scored the same number of away goals, the second leg will be extended. If no goal was scored in extra time, a penalty shoot-out was played.

↑ As of April 2010
-
↑ including the 2010 World Cup
-
↑ The predecessors of the Serbian national soccer team were Yugoslavia (eight participations between 1950 and 1990), Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1998) and Serbia and Montenegro (2006).
-
↑ Czechoslovakia took part in eight World Cup finals from 1930 to 1990; Politically, the succession has the Czech Republic, FIFA treats both states as successors.
European Zone / UEFA
mode
All 53 UEFA associations were registered to take part in the qualification . For the draw on November 25, 2007 in Durban, the teams were divided into six pots, the composition of which was based on their position in the FIFA world rankings valid at the time.
In the European qualification there were nine groups (eight groups of six, one group of five), of which the group winners qualified directly for the 2010 World Cup. The remaining four places were awarded in play-offs between the eight best runners-up in the group. The worst runners-up was eliminated. As was customary in the past, the games of the runners-up against the bottom of the table within the groups of six were not counted for comparability between the runners-up in the groups.

Second round
Ranking of the runners-up
The best eight of the nine runners-up in the group carried out play-offs. To determine the ranking, only the results of the encounters against the first and third to fifth of the respective group were evaluated. The games against the group sixth were not counted so that the second in group 9, which consisted of only five teams, also had a chance of reaching the play-offs.
Due to the qualifying games, the following table resulted; Norway was eliminated as the worst runners-up in the group:

Play-off matches
The teams in places one to eight were drawn against each other in four pairings with a return game after the first round was completed on October 19, 2009 in Zurich . They were divided into two pots depending on their placement in the FIFA world rankings, which had been updated three days earlier . This classification caused criticism because it was not originally intended.
Pot 1: France Portugal Russia GreeceFrance Portugal Russia Greece
Pot 2: Ukraine Ireland Bosnia and Herzegovina SloveniaUkraine Ireland Bosnia and Herzegovina Slovenia
Portugal had to play both games without Cristiano Ronaldo . At home they reached a 1-0. With four Bundesliga players, but without Misimović from Wolfsburg , the Bosnians also lost the second leg 0-1. The departure of the Russians trained by Guus Hiddink was a surprise . Hiddink led the Netherlands to the World Cup in 1998 and Australia in 2006, and in 2002 looked after South Korea, which was automatically qualified as host. In the 1-0 win for Slovenia in the second leg, two Russian players were sent off the field. Bochum's Dedič scored the winning goal .
Otto Rehhagel , German coach of the Greeks, was under pressure after his team's weak 0-0 draw. In his 100th game as a coach for Greece, however, he made it 1-0 in the second leg. The second leg between France and Ireland caused a stir. After Ireland took the lead, it was extended. After a wide free kick from midfield, Henry used his hand twice. While the Irish protested, Gallas headed a close range.
On November 30, 2009, Ireland applied to be the 33rd team to participate in the 2010 World Cup. FIFA President Blatter promised that the Executive Committee would deal with this proposal, but gave the Irish little hope: "Then you would have to allow Costa Rica, which lost to Uruguay because of an offside goal" .
As part of an investigation into corruption at FIFA , it became known in June 2015 that FIFA had paid the Irish federation five million dollars to deal with its complaint.
South American Zone / CONMEBOL
mode
All ten teams that belong to the South American football association CONMEBOL played in a group with home and away legs. The four best-placed teams qualified directly for the 2010 World Cup, the fifth-placed team played another place with the fourth in the CONCACAF group.

North, Central American and Caribbean Zones / CONCACAF
mode
The qualification in the CONCACAF zone was played in four rounds. First, 12 teams were determined in two knockout rounds with a home and return leg, which played a group stage in the third round. Six teams who played off the World Cup participants in a group qualified for the fourth round.
First round
In the first round, the 22 worst -ranked teams in the FIFA world rankings competed against each other in a knockout system with a return leg. The following games were drawn. The eleven winners of the first round advanced to the second round.
1 Between the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas, the away goals rule decided in favor of the Bahamas. Curiously, both games took place in the Bahamas, so the team - geographically speaking - did not score an away goal at all. According to the draw, the second leg counted as the “home game” of the Virgin Islands with the aforementioned effect.
2 The three matches were only decided in one game each.
Second round
The eleven first-round winners played against the 13 best-placed teams in the FIFA rankings with a bye for the first round, using a knockout system with two legs to determine the twelve participants in the third round.
The following 13 teams qualified automatically for the second round: Costa Rica • Guatemala • Guyana • Haiti • Honduras • Jamaica • Canada • Cuba • Mexico • Panama • St. Vincent and the Grenadines • Trinidad and Tobago • United States

Asian Zone / AFC
mode
The first two rounds of the Asian qualification took place in the knockout system . Group matches followed in the third round. The fourth round also took place in two groups, whose winners and runners-up then qualified for the World Cup, while the third-placed players play for a place in the playoffs against the winner of the OFC qualification.
Australia , South Korea , Saudi Arabia , Japan and Iran had a bye to the third round as the top five in the Asian ranking.
First round
In the first round, the teams in the rankings 6 to 24 met teams in the rankings 25 to 43. At the draw on August 6, 2007 in Kuala Lumpur ( Malaysia ), the following games were determined for the first round:
1 The game was rated 3-0 for Singapore by FIFA as the Palestinian Territories did not play for the second leg.
2 Kuwait continues without a fight as Bhutan has withdrawn.
3 Indonesia continued without a fight as Guam has withdrawn.
Second round
In the second round, of the 19 winners of the first round, only the eight worst-placed teams according to the Asian ranking list competed.
Third round
The eleven best-placed winners of the first round and all winners of the second round as well as the teams in the rankings 1 to 5, who had bye until now, were divided into five groups of four teams each. These played a normal championship system with back and forth legs. The winners and runners-up in each group qualified for the fourth round. The draw took place as part of the main qualification draw on November 25, 2007 in Durban.
Overview
1 FIFA had provisionally excluded Kuwait from qualifying because the association had not implemented decisions made by FIFA and the AFC. On November 9, 2007, FIFA temporarily lifted the suspension. Should the Kuwaiti Football Association fail to meet its obligations, the suspension will come back into force.

1 Due to the continued tense situation between the North and South Korean Football Associations, the game between North Korea and South Korea took place in Shanghai as in the previous round .
Fifth round
Playoff games to determine fifth in AFC qualification
African Zone / CAF
mode
In the first round, the field was reduced to 48 teams. The worst-placed teams in the FIFA rankings played a pre-qualification. The second qualifying round was a group stage in which 20 teams qualified for the third round. In the third round, the five World Cup participants were determined in further group matches.
South Africa qualified as hosts. Since the World Cup qualification was also counted as qualification for the 2010 African Cup in Angola, South Africa and Angola also played the qualification. If the South African team had qualified for the third round, the games in which South Africa was involved would qualify for the African Championship, but not for the World Cup qualification. The opposite was true for Angola. Neither happened, as both were eliminated in the second round.
First round
Since more than 48 national teams had registered, the ten worst teams in the African rankings played against each other in the first round in a knockout system with a return game to reach the number of 48 teams.
In early September 2007, the Central African Republic and São Tomé and Príncipe withdrew their teams from qualifying, the game originally drawn between these two teams was therefore canceled. The two best-placed of the remaining teams, Swaziland and the Seychelles, thus reached round 2 without play. The original opponents of the two teams, Djibouti and Somalia, instead played against each other. The first leg in Somalia was canceled by FIFA as the stadiums in Somalia are not suitable for FIFA games according to FIFA, so only one game between the two teams took place in Djibouti.
Second round
The winners of the first round and the 45 teams (including Swaziland and Seychelles) that did not have to play were divided into twelve groups of four for the second round, in which a championship system with home and away games was played. The draw was part of the main qualifying draw on November 25, 2007 in Durban . The winners and the eight best runners-up qualified for the third round. When determining the best runner-up in the groups of four, the games against the fourth-placed player were not taken into account.
Overview
1 South Africa had already been selected to host the World Cup finals, but took part in the qualification as it also served as the qualifying tournament for the 2010 Africa Cup .

Ethiopia Ethiopia was excluded from the preliminary round by FIFA on September 12th and all games played up to that point were removed from the rating.
|
With effect from July 29, 2008, FIFA suspended the Ethiopian Football Association (EFF). In February 2008, FIFA, the EFF and the CAF decided on an action plan to normalize the “situation within the association”. This included in particular an extraordinary general assembly and the handover of the "EFF offices to the lawful management of the association". For several months, FIFA unsuccessfully called for compliance with the action plan. Since, according to FIFA, none of the points were implemented, the Ethiopian Football Association suspended them and excluded Ethiopia from the preliminary round.

Ranking of the runners-up
Only the results of the encounters against the first and third of the respective group were evaluated. The games against the group fourth were not counted so that the runners-up in groups 8 and 11, which consisted of only three teams, also had a chance of reaching the third round. South Africa was eliminated as the worst runners-up in the group after the second round and was therefore unable to take part in the 2010 African Cup, but as host of the World Cup, of course. The same applied to Angola at the 2010 African Cup of Nations.

Playoff
After the regular games, Egypt and Algeria were tied in their group (13 points), had achieved the same goal difference in all games in Group 3 (+5) and also scored the same absolute number of goals (9). In a direct match against each other, they had each won once (3 points) and scored the same goal difference (3: 3). According to the FIFA rules (see above ), the drawing of lots between the two teams was waived and instead a playoff was stipulated in a neutral country, the winner of which finally qualified for participation in the World Cup.
After the qualifying game in Cairo on November 14, 2009, Algerians suffered injuries from Egyptian fans, but the Egyptian press did not, or at best, reported heavily. In the Algerian press, on the other hand, there was initially talk of deaths, which were later denied by the official government side. After the game in Sudan, Egyptians were attacked by Algerians. The Egyptian media at times spoke of several dozen dead until these reports were corrected again. In the meantime there was great excitement, especially among the Egyptian population; Gamal Mubarak , the Egyptian general secretary of the political committee of the ruling National Democratic Party and son of the then President Hosni Mubarak , also spoke up .

The first round of qualification took place with ten teams during the South Pacific Games , which were played from August 25 to September 8, 2007 in Samoa . The three best teams of this tournament play between October 13, 2007 and September 10, 2008 in a group of four with New Zealand in the OFC Nations Cup . The winner competes in play-offs against the fifth placed AFC qualifier (Asia).
First round
The 2007 South Pacific Games tournament was used for the first round . Tuvalu is not a member of FIFA and therefore could not qualify for the 2010 World Cup, but took part in the South Pacific Games as a member of the OFC . Although registered for the 2010 World Cup qualification, the team from Papua New Guinea did not take part in the games and thus could not qualify for the 2010 World Cup either.
All games were played at the Toleafoa JS Blatter Soccer Stadium in Apia , Samoa .
