The East Timorese national soccer team is the national soccer team of the Southeast Asian island state of East Timor (Timor-Leste). She is the selection team of the national football association Federação Futebol Timor-Leste (FFTL). The team is one of the weakest in the world. history

East Timor played for the first time internationally in the qualifying round for the Asian Cup in March 2003. East Timor lost 3-2 to Sri Lanka and 3-0 to Taiwan .

In 2004, East Timor took part in the Tiger Cup for the first time . At the most important tournament in Southeast Asia, the country surprisingly took part after the Asian Football Association decided at a meeting in Petaling Jaya to allow East Timor to play, although it was not yet a full member of the association. The President of the FFTL, Francisco Kalbuadi, was also invited to the meeting.

In 2008 the “Crocs” got a point for the first time. They drew 2-2 against Cambodia. The compensation for Cambodia fell shortly before the end of the game.

The national team is victorious in regional games. At the Arafura Games 2009 she won the gold medal after victories against the teams of the Australian Northern Territory , the Indonesian East Nusa Tenggara and in the final against the Indonesian Aceh . East Timor won the final 3-0. The U23 team was the first East Timorese team to win a national game on November 5, 2011 against the selection of Brunei 2-1. The senior national team scored their first international win in qualifying for the 2012 ASEAN soccer championship when Cambodia were defeated 5-1.

On March 12, 2015, the national team played an international match in their own country for the first time. In the first round of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , she defeated the Mongolian national football team 4-1 (2-0) in the national stadium of East Timor .

On May 28, 2015, team manager Orlando Marques Henriques Mendes was arrested in Singapore. He is said to have received $ 15,000 so that the East Timorese U23 team would lose the upcoming game against Malaysia at the Southeast Asian Games. One of the three other suspects in this case is former East Timorese international Moises Natalino de Jesus .

In order to strengthen for the national team, more than a dozen Brazilians , including Célio and Juninho , were granted East Timorese citizenship by 2015 alone . The procedure caused displeasure among fans and competing associations. On December 12, 2017, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee punished East Timor for having nine national players who did not comply with the rules because of their nationality. Seven qualifying matches for the 2018 World Cup were counted as defeats and the national association has to pay a fine of 40,000 Swiss francs. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) had previously sanctioned East Timor. In qualifying, East Timor was eliminated in the second round after two draws and six defeats in Group A.
