The Jordanian national soccer team is the national team of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in the Middle East.

World championships

Jordan has not yet managed to qualify for a World Cup. In 2014, the team only failed in the intercontinental playoffs against Uruguay .

Jordan first took part in qualifying for the world's most important soccer tournament in 1986 . After a 1-0 win against Qatar , the team lost the following three games and had to give way to the teams from Iraq and Qatar. When qualifying for the tournament in Italy in 1990 , the Jordanian selection was also only third in their qualifying group behind Qatar and Iraq . In qualifying for the 1994 World Cup , Jordan celebrated their highest win in a World Cup qualifier to date with a 5-0 win over Pakistan .

Four years later, Jordan was eliminated in the preliminary round of World Cup qualification: In a group of three, they finished second with four points behind the United Arab Emirates and ahead of Bahrain . In the qualification for Japan and South Korea in 2002 things went even worse: In the first phase of the AFC qualification, Jordan was only third in the group behind Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan . On the other hand, a new temporary record victory in World Cup qualification succeeded on home soil with a 6-0 win against Taiwan .

In qualifying for Germany in 2006 , Jordan just barely missed advancing into the third round of the Asian qualifiers. Before the last match day, after four wins in five games, the team was level with the favorites and eventual World Cup participants Iran , but lost the last away game in Qatar 2-0. Jordan had previously achieved a surprise success with a 1-0 away win in Iran . In front of 35,000 spectators at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran , the outsider won with a goal from Haitham Al Shboul in the 83rd minute.

In the following qualification for South Africa 2010 , Jordan reached the third round, where they once again missed qualifying for the world tournament as third in the group behind South Korea and North Korea . With a 2-2 draw against South Korea at the away game in Seoul , Jordan achieved a remarkable result against a later finalist in this World Cup qualifying tournament.

In qualifying for the 2014 final in Brazil , Jordan competed against Nepal in the second round after a bye in the first round . The Jordanians won the first leg in Amman 9-0, which meant both a new Jordanian World Cup qualifying record win and the highest victory of a Jordanian national soccer team. With four goals, Hassan Abdel Fattah was the most successful goalscorer in this game. The second leg in Nepal ended 1-1.

In the third round, Jordan won their first four games against group opponents Iraq , China and Singapore and qualified early for the fourth round of the AFC qualification. There they took third place in group B and then met third in group A, Uzbekistan . The two direct World Cup participants Japan and Australia had defeated Jordan 2: 1 at home, but clearly lost away (0: 6 in Japan , 0: 4 in Australia ). On the last day of Group B, the Jordanian team defeated Oman 1-0 in Amman and jumped to third place.

The first leg against Uzbekistan in Amman ended 1-1. In the second leg in Tashkent the score was 1: 1 after 90 minutes and also after extra time, so the penalty shoot-out had to decide. There Jordan won 9: 8 and secured participation in the intercontinental playoffs against Uruguay , the fifth in the South America qualification (CONMEBOL) . After the home game was lost 5-0, the underdog achieved a 0-0 win against the two-time soccer world champion in Montevideo , which was not enough to qualify for the World Cup for the first time.

In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , the team met Australia , Tajikistan , Kyrgyzstan and Bangladesh in the second round .

Asian Championships

In 2004 , Jordan qualified for an Asian football championship for the first time . After two 0-0 draws against South Korea and the United Arab Emirates and a 2-0 win against Kuwait , they were able to move into the quarter-finals as second in the preliminary group. There it was 1-1 draw against Japan after regular time . In the penalty shoot-out, Jordan were finally beaten 3: 4 and eliminated.

After missing the qualification for the 2007 tournament , Jordan again took part in the Asian Championship in 2011 . In Qatar , the team defied the eventual tournament winner Japan from a 1-1 draw in the first group game ; the Jordanians had led 1-0 through a goal from Hassan Abdel Fattah until stoppage time . After two victories over Saudi Arabia and Syria , they qualified for the quarter-finals as second in the group. There Jordan retired after a 2-1 defeat against Uzbekistan .

At the 2015 Asian Cup in Australia , Jordan met defending champions Japan in Group D , Iraq and the selection of Palestine were other opponents . Jordan finished third in the group with three points and was eliminated.

player

Hassan Abdel Fattah is regarded as the outstanding player in the Jordanian selection of the past few years . The striker, who in addition to his engagement at Club al-Wihdat in Amman, already played in the league of the United Arab Emirates as well as in Syria and Kuwait , gained notoriety through his important goals. Abdel Fattah scored twice in the 2: 2 in South Korea in May 2008, four times in the 9: 0 record win against Nepal or in the surprising 1: 1 against Japan at the 2011 Asian Cup.

With striker Thaer Bawab , who comes from the youth of Real Madrid and plays for the Romanian first division club CSU Craiova in 2014/15 , only one Jordan international is active in Europe. Odai Al-Saify was under contract with Alki Larnaka in Cyprus during the 2010/11 season .
