The Egyptian national football team is subordinate to the Egyptian Football Association . As the first team from the African continent, they took part in a soccer World Cup in 1934 , but the team failed in the first round with 2: 4 to Hungary . A second time Egypt was able to qualify for the World Cup in 1990, but failed in the preliminary round. From 1958 to 1970 the Egyptian national soccer team started under the name United Arab Republic (between 1958 and 1961 jointly with Syria ).
Egypt won the first African Championship in 1957 and repeated the success in 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010; thus Egypt is the sole record holder of the title. In 2010 the team was the first to win the African Championship for the third time in a row. In 1992, Egypt also won the Arab Cup title .
By winning the Africa Cup for the third time in a row, Egypt moved up 14 places in the FIFA world rankings in February 2010 and was placed there as the best African team until February 2011, when Egypt fell back to 3rd place among the African teams.
In Arabic , the Egyptian national soccer team is literally the selection / national team of Egypt for soccer ( Arabic منتخب مصر لكرة القدم, DMG muntaḫab maṣr li-kurat al-qadam ) or short selection / national team ( muntachab ). In Egypt and abroad, the team, like Egyptian athletes in general, also has the nickname " Pharaohs " ( Arabic الفراعنة, DMG farāʿina ).
