The 1992 Africa Cup ( English : African Cup of Nations , French : Coupe d'Afrique des Nations ) was the 18th edition of the African continental football championship and took place in Senegal from January 12th to 26th . Organized by the African continental soccer federation Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), twelve teams from Egypt , Algeria , Ivory Coast , Ghana , Cameroon , Kenya , Republic of the Congo , Morocco , Nigeria , Zambia , Senegal and Zaire took part for the first time.

As in previous years, there was also a qualification to reduce the field of participants with the new record number of 37 applicants to the twelve finalists, whereby the host Senegal and defending champion Algeria were automatically qualified.

The increased number of finalists also led to an adjustment in the game mode. From now on the game was played with four groups of three teams each. The two best teams in each group then played the tournament winner from the quarter-finals in the knockout system . The final round matches were played in the Stade de l'Amitié (60,000 places) in Dakar and in the Stade Aline Sitoe Diatta (10,000 places) in Ziguinchor.

The Ivory Coast won the tournament, became African champions in football and was thus qualified for the first King Fahd Cup in 1992 , the forerunner of the later FIFA Confederations Cup .
