The 1980 Africa Cup ( English : African Cup of Nations , French : Coupe d'Afrique des Nations ) was the twelfth game of the African continental football championship and took place in Nigeria from March 8 to 22 . Organized by the African continental football association Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), eight teams from Egypt , Algeria , Ivory Coast , Ghana , Guinea , Morocco , Nigeria and Tanzania took part.

As in previous years, there was also a qualification to reduce the field of participants from 28 applicants to eight finalists, with the host Nigeria and the defending champion Ghana automatically qualifying.

As usual, the game was played with two groups of four teams each. The two best teams in each group then played the tournament winner from the semi-finals in the knockout system . The final round matches were played at the Surulere Stadium (45,000 seats) in Lagos and the Liberty Stadium (25,000 seats) in Ibadan.

Host Nigeria was able to use its home advantage, won the tournament and became African champions in football for the first time.
