The 1963 Africa Cup ( English : African Cup of Nations , French : Coupe d'Afrique des Nations ) was the fourth game of the African continental football championship and took place in Ghana from November 24th to December 1st . Organized by the African continental football association Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), six teams from Ethiopia , VA Republic (Egypt and Syria), Ghana , Nigeria , Sudan and Tunisia took part for the first time. The game was played with two groups of three teams each. The two group winners contested the final, the group runners-up the game for third place. As in the previous year, a qualification took place to reduce the field of participants from ten to the six finalists, with the host Ghana and defending champion Ethiopia automatically qualifying. The final round matches were played at the Accra Sports Stadium in Accra and the Kumasi Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
The host's team won the title for the first time and became African champions in football.
