The 32nd Africa Cup ( English 2019 Africa Cup of Nations , French Coupe d'Afrique des Nations 2019 ) was held in Egypt from June 21 to July 19, 2019 . For the first time, 24 national teams from the continent took part in the finals instead of 16 national teams , as has been the case since 1996 . It was first played in a group stage in six groups of four teams and then in the knockout system .
The winner was for the second time after 1990 Algeria , which won the final at the Cairo International Stadium 1-0 against Senegal . In the game for third place, Nigeria beat Tunisia 1-0 . Both defending champions Cameroon and hosts Egypt were eliminated in the round of 16.
Host
The host was to be Cameroon for the second time since 1972 . On November 30, 2018, the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) withdrew the country from hosting the tournament due to delays in infrastructure projects at the planned venues. As a replacement, South Africa , where modern stadiums will be available thanks to the 2010 World Cup , and Egypt have expressed their interest. At a meeting in Dakar on January 8, 2019, the CAF awarded the hosting rights to Egypt with a 16-1 vote. The country hosted the Africa Cup for the fifth time.
Attendees
qualification
51 teams registered for the qualification, which, unlike 2017, was held in two rounds. Due to their withdrawal in the 2017 qualification , the CAF excluded the team from Chad from participating. Eritrea and Somalia did not participate. Reunion and Zanzibar were not full members of the CAF and therefore excluded from participation. In the draw in January 2017, the participating teams were divided into five different pots using CAF's own point system. The six weakest teams identified in this way competed against each other in the first round in the knockout system with a return game in March 2017 .
The three winners of the first round and the remaining 45 higher-placed teams had already been drawn into twelve groups of four in January 2017. The second round was played in the double round robin format from June 2017 to March 2019. In contrast to 2017, the games of the host of the final round, who took part in Group J, were no longer played as friendlies, but instead were regularly rated.
The twelve group winners and twelve runners-up qualified for the final round.
draw
The group draw took place on April 12, 2019 in front of the Giza Pyramids . The Egyptian team was set to host automatically as head of Group A, while Cameroon was set as the defending champion also in pot first The remaining teams were distributed according to their respective placements in the FIFA world rankings on April 4, 2019.

Venues
In the original host country of Cameroon , the Africa Cup was to be held in six different stadiums in five cities, including two stadiums in the state capital Yaoundé . Three of the six stadiums would have had a capacity of 20,000 spectators. The largest planned stadium was the Stade d'Olembé in the capital Yaoundé with a capacity of 60,000 spectators.
After the award to Egypt, eight stadiums were provisionally named as venues in January 2019, including two stadiums each in the capital Cairo , Alexandria and Suez . A month later, the number was reduced to six stadiums, with one venue each in Alexandria and Suez no longer being considered. In March 2019, the Port Said Stadium in Port Said was replaced with the larger al Salam Stadium in Cairo. Three stadiums were already venues for the Africa Cup in 2006 , the Cairo International Stadium and the Alexandria Stadium in 1974 and 1986 .
Five of the six stadiums had a capacity of between 15,000 and 30,000 spectators. The largest stadium was the Cairo International Stadium in the capital Cairo with a capacity of 75,000 spectators, while the smallest venue, the Ismailia Stadium only had space for 16,000 spectators.

mode
Tournament form
For the first time since the Africa Cup in 1996 , when the field of participants was increased from 12 to 16, there was a new mode. The game was played in six groups of four, with the group first and second and the four best group third qualified for the round of 16 . The four best group thirds played in the round of 16 against the group winners of groups A, B, C and D. The group winners of group E played against group runners-up in group D and the group winners of group F against group runners-up in group E. The group runners-up in group A and C and B and F played against each other.
From the round of 16 onwards, the knockout system was used , in which extra time and a penalty shoot-out were possible. In the game for third place, a draw should have been followed directly by the penalty shoot-out after regular time. The number of games increased from 32 to 52. The final round was therefore extended from three to four weeks.
The group stage took place on June 21. to July 2, 2019, the finals began on July 5 and ended with the finals on July 19, 2019.
Placement rules
If more than two teams were tied, the placement was determined by the following criteria:
- 1. Number of points in direct comparison
- 2. Goal difference in direct comparison
- 3. Number of goals in direct comparison
- 4. If, after applying criteria 1 to 3, two teams still occupy the same place in the table, criteria 1 to 3 are reapplied, but only to the matches between the teams in question
If this does not result in a definitive placement either, criteria 5 to 7 are applied:
- 5. Goal difference from all group matches
- 6. Number of goals in all group matches
- 7. Drawing of lots
If only two teams were tied, criteria 2, 3 and 4 were not applied. To determine the four best thirds in the group , points 5 to 7 were used if two or more teams were tied.

Ranking of third party groups
The four best group thirds played in the round of 16 against the group winners of groups A, B, C and D. The exact pairings depended on the groups from which the third parties qualified. For each of the fifteen possibilities, a table in the official regulations stipulated the assignment as follows.

Final round
In the final round, the game was played in a knockout system . If there was a draw after the normal playing time of 90 minutes, there was an extension of 15 minutes twice and possibly (if there was still no winner) a penalty shoot-out . The only exception was the game for third place in which a penalty shoot-out should follow directly in the event of a tie.

referee
On June 6, 2019, the CAF initially appointed 26 referees and 30 assistant referees for the tournament. Since Gehad Grisha's six-month suspension imposed in May 2019 was lifted shortly before the start of the tournament, he was subsequently added to the list of referees. Three referees each came from Egypt and Tunisia, two each from Morocco and Senegal. Seven referees belonged to an association whose team could not qualify for the competition.
Video evidence was used from the quarterfinals . The referee was supported by a video assistant team, which consisted of a video assistant and two other assistant referees. In addition to the Gambier Bakary Gassama , the Dutch Pol van Boekel and the French Benoît Millot were also used as video assistants .
The Cameroonian Sidi Alioum was responsible for both the opening game and the final .
