Islam Slimani ( Arabic إسلام سليماني, DMG Islām Sulaimānī ; * June 18, 1988 in Algiers ) is an Algerian football player who has been under contract with Leicester City since August 2016 .

Career

society

Islam Slimani began his career in 2007 with WB Ain Benian in the Algerian fifth division, where he had already worked in the youth departments. Just one season later, he joined JSM Chéraga . After Slimani had scored a total of 18 goals in 20 league games for the club in the 2008/09 season, he moved to CR Belouizdad on May 17, 2009 for a transfer fee of 800,000 Algerian dinars , where he signed a two-year contract. He was also successful as a goalscorer for Belouizdad in the following seasons. Exactly two years to the day after his move, he scored four goals in a 7-1 victory over JS Kabylie . In July 2011, he extended his contract for another two years, although several French clubs were interested in Slimani. Towards the end of the 2012/13 season there was more and more signs of Slimani moving to Europe. After he had specifically expressed this wish in July 2013, he was initially refused approval. However, just a few weeks later, he was dismissed from his contract with CR Belouizdad by the arbitration tribunal for disputes due to failure to pay his salary. Shortly afterwards he went to France to negotiate with FC Nantes .

However, on August 8, he signed a contract with Sporting Lisbon that dates to 2017 and includes a € 30m release clause. Slimani, who played in the Algerian fifth division in 2008, finally made his debut in the UEFA Champions League against NK Maribor on September 17, 2014, a good six years later .

On August 31, 2016, Leicester City announced Slimani's signing. He signed a five-year contract.

In late January 2018, Slimani was loaned to Newcastle United for the remainder of the season . Due to a thigh injury until March 2018 and a suspension by the sports court for the last three games of the season, he only played four league games for Newcastle. The next season he was loaned to Fenerbahçe Istanbul . From the end of February 2019 he was no longer included in the matchday squad.

For the 2019/20 season there was another loan, this time to AS Monaco with a subsequent purchase option.

National team

In October 2009 Slimani was invited to the one-week training camp of the Algerian A 'national team in Algiers . On March 9, 2010 he was nominated by coach Abdelhak Benchikha for the qualifying game against Libya at the 2011 African Nations Cup . He was called up to replace his injured teammate Youcef Saïbi . However, he was not used, Algeria won the game 1-0.

On May 12, 2012 Slimani was nominated for the first time for the senior national team, namely for the qualifying matches for the 2014 World Cup against Rwanda and Mali , as well as for the qualifying game for the 2013 African Cup against Gambia . He made his international debut on May 26 as a substitute in the friendly against Niger . Slimani was successful in both World Cup qualifying matches, and he even scored a brace against Gambia. He also took part in the 2013 African Cup of Nations with Algeria. In this tournament, however, he did not succeed. A year later, Slimani was featured four times in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, scoring decisive goals in the preliminary round matches against South Korea and Russia. He thus played a major role in the Algerians' round of 16, where they were eliminated 1: 2 after extra time against Germany. At the 2014 World Cup, he was twice named Man of the Match , at the games against Russia and South Korea .

Slimani was part of the Algerian national team for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015 , 2017 and 2019 . At the tournament in 2019 he was the African champion with the national team.
