Brenha is a locality and former municipality ( freguesia ) in Portugal and belongs to the district ( concelho ) of Figueira da Foz .

history

Traces of human settlement in the area go back to the Paleolithic Age . From the 12th to the 18th century, the area belonged to the Santa Cruz Monastery in Coimbra , which built the Igreja de São Teotónio church here. Brenha belonged to the district of Maiorca until 1854, only to be incorporated into the district of Figueira da Foz. Until 1934 Brenha belonged to the municipality of Quiaios , in order to be an independent municipality since then.

Culture, sports and sights

The parish church Igreja de São Teotónio has been a listed monument since 2004 as Imóvel de Interest Municipal . It was rebuilt from a previous church in the 17th century and has undergone various changes and extensions over the centuries. On the last weekend of July, the most important festival of the municipality takes place in honor of São Teotónio, during which the streets are decorated with garlands, a procession is held and in the evening there is music, dancing and gastronomy. Also medieval markets are occasionally held.

In the town of Brenha, two amateur theater groups are active with the Troupe Recreativa Brenhense and the Clube União Brenhense , which perform in the Teatro Taborda , built in 1897 .

In Vale do Jorge, one last windmill has been preserved for museum purposes.

administration

Brenha was the seat of a municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Figueira da Foz , in the Coimbra district . On June 30, 2011 the community had 907 inhabitants on an area of 5.9 km².

The following places are in the former municipality of Brenha:

  • Brenha
  • Cabanas
  • Lírio
  • Vale do Jorge
  • Fonte Casal
  • Estrerneira
  • Cova da Serpe (partly)

In the course of the local reorganization of Portugal after the local elections on September 29, 2013, the municipality of Brenha was dissolved and Alhadas was incorporated .

The Alhadas - Brenha railway station

traffic

Until the suspension of the Ramal da Figueira da Foz in 2009, the community had a railway connection through its common train station with Alhadas . The completion of the renovation work and the reopening of the line have been postponed until further notice in view of the country's financial crisis.

economy

The lime kilns , which were important in earlier times, have all been given up, and agriculture, which was once dominant, has clearly lost its importance. The earlier, nationally known wine production is only significant today in the town's coat of arms. After a part of the working population emigrated, especially in the 1950s and 60s, a large part of the population now earns its living in more central parts of the Figueira da Foz district.
