Maiorca is a municipality ( freguesia ) in Portugal and belongs to the district ( concelho ) of Figueira da Foz .

history

Phoenicians , Romans and Moors left traces, but no finds of greater importance are known. The name goes back to the squeezed position of the place between the rivers Rio Mondego and Rio Foja, and the Arabic words "mal" (very) and "horca" (eng). Maiorca received town charter in 1194. From 1834 to 1853 it was a separate district ("concelho"), and since then has belonged to the district of Figueira da Foz.

Attractions

Paço de Maiorca

In addition to the main church Igreja Paroquial de São Salvador from the 17th century, there are various smaller churches and chapels, some from the 15th century. The baroque mansion of the Viscondes of Maiorca from the 18th century is worth seeing . The building called Paço de Maiorca or Paço dos Viscondes de Maiorca has been a listed building since 1977. It was acquired in 1999 by the city of Figueira da Foz under its mayor Pedro Santana Lopes and has since been open for tours and as a venue, including a. for exhibitions, classical music concerts or even fado concerts. Some rooms are lined with remarkable azulejos . The building is surrounded by gardens, from which hiking routes lead into the area, such as the rice fields and wooded hills along the Mondego, e.g. B. to the Iron Age archaeological site of Santa Olaia .

traffic

The place is on the national road 111 and is connected to the A14 and A17 motorways .

Since the temporary suspension of the Ramal da Figueira da Foz line , the place no longer has any connection to the railway network. In view of the country's financial situation, no information has currently been given on the reopening. A connection to the town is also under discussion as part of a possible extension of the Mondego Metro from Coimbra to Figueira da Foz.
