The Mondego is a river in Portugal. It is 234 km long and the longest river that flows exclusively through Portugal. It rises at an altitude of 1425 m in the Serra da Estrela and flows into the Atlantic at Figueira da Foz . At its source it bears the name Mondeguinho ("little Mondego"). In Roman times the river was called Munda .
On its way from the source to the mouth, it flows past Manteigas , Celorico da Beira , Penacova , Coimbra and Montemor-o-Velho . At Carregal do Sal , in the Baixo Mondego , the Anta Lapa da Orca de Fiães da Telha lies on its bank. Its main tributaries are the Dão on the right, with which it forms an artificial lake, and the Alva , Ceira , Arunca and Pranto to the left.
The stretch between Penacova and Coimbra is ideal for canoeists . The valley is home to the maritime pine ( Pinus pinaster ).
