The Raiva power plant ( Portuguese Barragem da Raiva or Barragem do Coiço ) is a run-of-river power plant located in the central region of Portugal in the Coimbra district. It dams the Mondego river to a reservoir ( Albufeira da Raiva in Portuguese ). A few kilometers upstream is the Aguieira dam . Approx. The small town of Penacova is 10 km downstream of the Raiva dam .

The power plant was put into operation in 1981 (or 1982). It is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE) but operated by Energias de Portugal (EDP). In 2009, Iberdrola won the tender to sell the electricity generated by the Aguieira and Raiva power plants.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 36 m above the foundation level (34 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 64.5 m above sea level . Their length is 200 m. The volume of the structure is 85,000 m³.

The dam wall is divided into an engine house on the left side of the river and a weir system with 2 gates in the middle. A maximum of 2,000 m³ / s can be discharged via the weir system. The dam also has a bottom outlet . The design flood is 3,500 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 61.5 m, the associated reservoir extends over an area of around 2.3 km² and holds 24.11 (or 21) million m³ of water - of which 14.71 (or 12) million m³ can can be used to generate electricity. The reservoir also serves as a lower basin for the Aguieira pumped storage power plant and for regulating the water flow of the Mondego.

Eels, trout and largemouth bass can be fished in the reservoir . It is also used for various water sports.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 20 (or 24) MW, the Raiva power plant is one of the smaller hydropower plants in Portugal. The average annual generation is 44.8 (or 44, 44.9 or 46) million kWh .

The two Francis turbines (with a horizontal shaft) each produce a maximum of 13 MW, while the generators produce 13  MVA . The nominal speed of the turbines is 200 / min. The generators have a nominal voltage of 3.5  kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 3.5 kV to 66 kV by means of power transformers.

The minimum height of fall is 12 m, the maximum 18 m. The maximum flow rate is 80 m³ / s per turbine.
