The Aguieira dam ( Portuguese Barragem da Aguieira ) is located in the region of central Portugal . It dams the Mondego , which at this point forms the border between the districts of Coimbra and Viseu , to a reservoir (Port. Albufeira da Barragem da Aguieira ). The closest small town is Penacova , southwest of the dam. About ten kilometers downstream of the Aguieira dam is the Raiva dam . A few kilometers downstream from the Raiva dam, the Alva flows into the Mondego.

The project to build the dam began in 1972. The construction was completed in 1981. In addition to generating electricity, the dam is also used for flood protection, drinking water supply and irrigation. It is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE).

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a multi-arched concrete dam with a height of 89 m above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at a height of 125 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 400 m. The volume of the structure is 365,000 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 180 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 2080 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 3500 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 117 m (maximum 126 m), the reservoir extends over an area of around 20 km² and holds 423 (or 450) million m³ of water - of which 304 (or 216 or 253) million m³ can be used . The minimum congestion destination at which the machines can still be operated is 100 m.

power plant

The Aguieira pumped storage power plant is one of the largest hydropower plants in Portugal with an installed capacity of 270 (or 336) MW . The average annual generation is 209.6 (or 193 or 256) million kWh .

The three Francis turbines of the power plant each have a maximum output of 112.4 MW and the generators 100  MVA . The nominal speed of the turbines is 125 / min. The pumps each have a maximum output of 91 MW. The nominal voltage of the generators is 12  kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 12 kV is increased to 230 kV using power transformers.

The minimum height of fall is 53.4 m, the maximum 71.6 m. The maximum flow is 180 m³ / s.

The turbines were supplied by Vevey / Nohab / Mague, while the generators are from Alstom / Sorefame . The three machines are located in a machine house at the foot of the dam. The Francis turbines are pump turbines that work as a pump or turbine, depending on the direction of rotation. As a pumped storage power plant, Aguieira serves to cover peak loads , with the reservoir of the Raiva dam being used as the lower basin.

The power plant is owned by CPPE but operated by Energias de Portugal (EDP) and Iberdrola .
