Penacova is a vila (small town) and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal with 3254 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
The place was first officially mentioned in 911, as Vila Cova . In 1036, under Arab rule, the fortification is already known as Castelo de Penacova (Eng .: Castle of Penacova). In the course of the Reconquista , Penacova was conquered and received city rights ( Foral ) for the first time in 1192 by the now independent Kingdom of Portugal .
King Manuel I renewed the city charter in 1513. In 1605 Penacova became an independent circle. In the years 1855 and 1898, the district was significantly expanded through incorporations.
Culture and sights
Numerous sacred buildings and some windmills , mansions and historical public buildings are listed, including the Mosteiro de Lorvão Monastery , which was first mentioned in 878 and expanded several times before its Baroque renovation in the 18th century , in which various queens are buried. In the monastery, which until 2012 partly housed a psychiatric clinic, there is a museum with a variety of exhibits of sacred art.
The historic center of Penacova is also a listed building.
In the direction of Serra do Buçaco , in a building built around a former windmill, is the Museu do Moinho Vitorino Nemésio (Eng .: Museum of the Vitorino Nemésio Mill). On two floors, and equipped with a café and a picnic parking lot, it shows the history of windmills and water mills in general and that of the local variants in particular.
