Mealhada is a municipality and city in the Aveiro district in Portugal with 4493 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Excavations attest to the settlement of the place at the time of the Romans . A Roman milestone found here from 39 BC. Is on display in the town hall.

In the course of the Reconquista , the Moors lost the area in 878. After Almansor recaptured it in 987, it finally fell to the Christian conquerors in 1064.

City rights were granted Mealhada 1514 by King Manuel I . In the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in Portugal , Mealhada became the seat of an independent circle ( concelho ) in 1855 .

In 2003, the previous small town ( Vila ) Mealhada was elevated to a city ( Cidade ).

Culture and sights

In the municipality of Luso are u. a. Thermal baths and the spa town of Buçaco with the historic Palácio Hotel do Buçaco , the protected forest area of ​​the Serra do Buçaco , and the military museum with a focus on the Battle of Buçaco (1810). Roman archaeological sites and a large number of sacred buildings are further sights of the district. The historic center of Mealhada is also a listed building.
