Espinho is a Portuguese city and municipality on the Atlantic coast in the metropolitan area of Porto . It belongs to the Aveiro District , the Norte Região and the Grande Porto sub-region .
history
At the end of the 18th century, fishermen from Furadouro ( Ovar County ) settled here . After living here only seasonally in light huts in the beginning, only to return to their hometowns in winter, some began to build permanent dwellings and to become permanent residents here. From the middle of the 19th century, the beach was increasingly frequented by the emerging middle class from the burgeoning industrial centers in the wider area.
With the arrival of the railroad in 1867, the development of the place took off rapidly. The urban development of Espinho began in 1870 with an initial plan. Streets were laid out like a chessboard, casinos, hotels and tourist bars were built. After the appointment as an independent municipality in 1889, Espinho became an independent district in 1899, by assigning territory to the district of Santa Maria da Feira .
Culture and sights
The place is known for its wide sandy beaches, for its casino, for its lively nightlife and its fish restaurants. Cycle paths and hiking trails are laid out, for example the 14 km long hiking trail along the coast from Espinho to Vila Nova de Gaia . Bird watching is possible at the Lagoa de Paramos lagoon . The Piscina Solário Atlântico outdoor swimming pool offers further bathing opportunities in addition to the lagoon and the beaches .
One of the most important cultural institutions in the city is the Fórum de Arte e Cultura de Espinho (FACE) art and cultural center, which has been set up in a former factory and offers an auditorium and various galleries with changing exhibitions, as well as the municipal museum ( Museu Municipal ). is housed. The Centro Multimeios is a planetarium , but also a congress and cultural center. The Cinamina - Festival Internacional de Cinema de Animação de Espinho , a film festival for animated films, has been taking place here since 1977 . A classical music festival takes place every year in the Academia de Música .
Sports
The most important sports club in the district is SC Espinho , whose football department was relegated from the second division ( Liga de Honra ) in 2005 and is currently playing in the third division . His volleyball team won the European Cup in 2001 and came second in 2002. Even indoor soccer ( Futsal ), handball, swimming, athletics and other sports are practiced in the club.
Espinho beach has repeatedly hosted beach volleyball tournaments on the FIVB World Tour and a European beach volleyball championship . The FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup also took place there in summer 2015 .
In 1932 the Free Game World Championship was held in the Espinho Casino . It was the first World Cup in billiards that took place in Portugal.
