Comboios de Portugal, Entidade Pública Empresarial ( CP, EPE or has CP ; German railways of Portugal ), [ kum'bɔjuʃ də purtu'gał ] listen ? / i is the Portuguese state railway company . Audio file / audio sample

history

It was founded in 1951 under the name Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses and renamed Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses, EP in 1975 - EP stands for empresa pública , public company.

In the course of the liberalization of the rail market demanded by the EU, the Portuguese state reformed the railway company. The rail network and the associated stations have been maintained by the Rede Ferroviária Nacional (REFER) since 1997, while the CP is in turn controlled by the Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes Terrestres . Since 2004 the CP has been advertising with its new name Comboios de Portugal (Railways of Portugal) instead of Caminhos-de-ferro portugueses (Portuguese Railways). The last change in corporate form took place in 2009, and since then the company has been trading as Comboios de Portugal, Entidade Pública Empresarial . The government has been planning to privatize the state railway for several years. In view of the desolate budget situation in Portugal, an imminent realization is currently expected, although the exact implementation (complete privatization, sale of subsidiaries, granting of liner concessions, etc.) is still unclear.

Until the European financial crisis, the number of passengers had risen continuously. In 2005 the CP carried 130.6 million passengers, in 2006 133.2 million, in 2007 134.7 million and in 2008 135.5 million passengers. In 2009 these fell to 131.27 million passengers, in 2010 to 130.08 million and in 2011 they fell to 126.14 million passengers. In 2012 the number of passengers fell again to 111.70 million passengers.
