The Medlog SA , formerly CP Carga - in German in about CP freight is a railway company that solely in freight transport operates in Portugal. CP Carga was a wholly owned subsidiary of the state-owned railway company Comboios de Portugal (CP) and was bought in 2015 by MSC Rail Portugal , a subsidiary of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). On May 16, 2016 the renaming of CP Carga to Medlog SA was published.

history

In 1997, the Portuguese state railway Comboios de Portugal (CP) fundamentally changed its corporate structure as part of the Portuguese railway reform and created corporate divisions for suburban traffic in Lisbon ( CP Lisboa ) and Porto ( CP Porto ), for maintenance, for regional ( CP Regional ) and long-distance transport ( CP Longo Curso ) as well as for freight transport (CP Carga, SA), which was founded on August 2, 2009.

In addition to CP Carga, the private railway company Takargo is also active in Portugal. This made CP Carga the only state-owned railway company that had direct (commercial) competition in its own business area.

CP Carga was one of the state-owned companies that was to be privatized by 2013 as part of the implementation of the national “Stability and Growth Program” ( Programa de Estabilidade e Crescimento ) due to the tight budget situation in Portugal . After delays, this should start in 2014. In July 2015 it was announced that CP Carga would be sold to the Geneva-based shipping company Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC); this was already the largest customer of the freight company. In addition to MSC, Atena Equity Partners and Cofihold also bid for the company. In September 2015, it was finally sold to the MSC subsidiary MSC Rail Portugal for 55 million euros . MSC plans to develop the company into the leading freight transport company on the Iberian Peninsula.

In May 2016, the company announced that, following an internal naming competition, the company would be renamed Medlog.

Business data

In the 2010 financial year, CP Carga generated an operating loss of 34.53 million euros (with income of 61.63 million euros and expenses of 96.16 million euros). In 2010 the company moved 9.22 million tons of goods, the most common goods being containers, cement and sand.

Vehicles and terminals

CP Carga has an extensive and diverse inventory of freight wagons (27 different types). It also has 60 different diesel locomotives and 25 electric locomotives of the 4700 series from Siemens (see also the list of Portuguese locomotive and multiple unit series ). Until privatization, the company was also able to use the vehicles and rolling stock from CP sister companies (for example the 5600 series from CP Longo Curso ).

CP Carga operates three of its own freight terminals (at Loulé , Bobadela (on the Tejo) and at the port of Leixões ).
