CP Longo Curso , in English "CP Fernverkehr", is the long-distance traffic division of the Portuguese state railway company Comboios de Portugal . It operates the entire Portuguese long-distance transport ( Intercidades , Alfa Pendular , Internacional ). CP Longo Curso , just like the logistics division CP Carga and in contrast to its subsidiaries CP Lisboa , CP Porto and CP Regional , operates exclusively self-service trains.

history

In 1997, the Portuguese state railway Caminhos-de-ferro Portugueses (CP) fundamentally changed its corporate structure as part of the Portuguese railway reform and created corporate divisions for suburban traffic in Lisbon and Porto, for maintenance as well as a joint division for regional and long-distance traffic ( CP Unidade de Viagens Interurbanas e Regionais , UVIR). In 2005, this was divided into CP Longo Curso (long-distance traffic) and CP Regional (regional traffic).

Despite the internally separate traffic divisions, the CP Longo Curso appears uniformly with the usual CP design.

International long-distance transport

The international long-distance traffic of the Comboios Portugal is relatively low: In addition to the regional connection between Porto and Vigo, which runs several times a day and is marketed under the name " Celta " by CP and its Spanish counterpart Renfe, there are only two night train connections: The Trenhotel Lusitânia (Lisbon –Madrid) and the Sud-Express (Lisbon – Hendaye, with a connection to Paris). For cost reasons, the two night train connections from Lisbon to Medina del Campo run in one train set before they are shared.

With the liberalization of the rail market from 2020 onwards, Comboios de Portugal are planning to set up a long-distance joint venture with Renfe in order to avoid competition between the two state railways. The Spanish Renfe operates a comparable model with the French SNCF under the name Elipsos . Jointly operated, cross-border connections such as Lisbon – Madrid, Lisbon – Barcelona, Coimbra – Salamanca and Lisbon – A Coruña are being considered.

Data

In 2007 Longo Curso carried 68 trains per working day 4.9 million passengers, in 2008 five million. The subsidiary currently employs 511 people.

The punctuality of the CP trains is sometimes very different. In 2007, 80 percent of all Alfa Pendular trips were on time; in 2008 it was 59.7 percent. It was similar with the Intercidades train ; In 2007, they were punctual in 76.1 percent of all journeys, and in 2008 in 63 percent of all cases. Of the cross-border Internacional trains in 2007 60.9 percent were on time, in 2008 73.7 percent.

In 2007, CP Longo Curso generated a profit of 79.2 million euros, which rose to 86 million euros in 2008.

CP Longo Curso operates a total of six Intercidades lines, two Alfa Pendular lines and three cross-border Internacional lines (as of December 2013).

Vehicle fleet

In principle, the Comboios de Portugal's fleet is handled relatively freely, so locomotives, which are actually primarily used for freight traffic, also run regularly for the CP Longo Curso in long-distance traffic. Nevertheless, the locomotives of the 1930 , 2620 and 5600 series can basically be assigned to the long-distance traffic division of the Portuguese national railway.

For the Intercidades lines, almost exclusively renovated INOX DEV wagons (similar to the Corail wagons in France) are used. Occasionally, trains of the 2240 series, which were actually intended for regional traffic, are used on the route to Covilhã . Since the route between Casa Branca and Beja is not electrified, modernized diesel multiple units of the 0450 series are operated there .

For the international route between Porto and Vigo (Galicia) - known as " Celta " since 2013 - CP Longo Curso commissioned the regional transport division CP Regional . Since the Linha do Minho is largely not electrified, diesel multiple units of the 0592 series are used. Talgo cars from Renfe Operadora are used for the sleeper connections to Madrid and Hendaye .

For the high-speed Alfa Pendular traffic between Braga, Porto, Lisbon and Faro, CP purchased ten six-part electric multiple units ( CP series 4000 ) built by Alstom in 1999 , which basically correspond to the Italian series ETR 460 (" Pendolino ").
