The CP class 5600 is a class of locomotives of the Portuguese state railway company Comboios de Portugal . It is based on the Siemens ES64P prototype and is used for both freight and high-speed long-distance transport. Since 1993 the CP has owned 29, originally 30, locomotives of this series.

history

The series was part of a modernization plan of the then state railway Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses (today Comboios de Portugal ), which was introduced based on the model of the Spanish RENFE , in the early 1990s . The LE 5600 is based on the Spanish locomotive series 252 , which is also part of the EuroSprinter series from Siemens Transportation Systems. From the beginning, the series was intended for universal use in the Portuguese rail network - both in freight traffic and in fast long-distance traffic.

The series was produced by a Portuguese-German consortium consisting of Siemens , Krauss-Maffei and the Portuguese Sorefame , which acted as a licensee. Production took place in what was then the Sorefame factory in Amadora. The contract between the consortium and the CP provided for the construction of 30 units with the delivery of one unit per month. There was also an option for 18 additional locomotives.

The series was officially presented in 1993 with the first copy (number 5601) in Entroncamento station . In the same year, other locomotives of the series went into operation, so that the first freight trains between Lisbon and Porto could be pulled by them and in the course of 1993/94 the first locomotives of the 1900 series could be decommissioned. By 1995, all 30 units had been completed, the option for 18 more locomotives was not fulfilled by the CP.

In 1993, the 5601 locomotive with three Corail cars set the current Portuguese speed record in regular passenger service with 220 km / h between the Espinho and Avance stations on the Linha do Norte. Until the introduction of the 4700 series , the locomotives were considered to be the most powerful of the CP.

With the introduction of this series, the Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses established a new color scheme consisting of the colors red and gray. This was supposed to replace the traditional color scheme of the Portuguese locomotives (orange and white) - which, however, ultimately did not happen. The series is still presented in the same colors today, but the latest 4700 series is in red and white. All old locomotives are still painted in orange and white.

The first four locomotives (5601, 5602, 5603 and 5604) were christened by the CP in 1993 with the names of the Portuguese cities Entroncamento , Porto , Lisboa (Lisbon) and Aveiro .

Technical specifications

Comparison between the Spanish 252 series and the Portuguese 5600 series - the differences are minimal.

Each class 5600 locomotive has four three-phase asynchronous motors, each with an output of 1400 kilowatts (1890 hp). The machines reach a top speed of 220 km / h, the average speed with continuous power being 70 km / h. The pulling force when starting is 300 kN, at maximum speed 90 kN and at average speed around 290 kN.

Compared to the very similar RENFE 252 series, the most fundamental difference is that the Spanish version is designed as a two-system vehicle for 25 kV AC voltage at 50 Hz and DC voltage for 3 kV, although the AC voltage equipment was not built into all machines. Some locomotives were later upgraded for operation with 1.5 kV. In addition, some of the Renfe locomotives run on standard gauge bogies. The Portuguese machines were supplied as single-system locomotives for 25 kV at 50 Hz and only in broad gauge design. In addition, there are externally visible differences in the buffers with a markedly different shape of the buffer plates and in the roof cladding.

commitment

The 5600 series from Comboios de Portugal is now used exclusively by the two business units CP Longo Curso (long-distance transport) and CP Carga (freight transport). It is mainly found on the two main railroad lines in Portugal, the Linha do Norte and the Linha do Sul . It is also used on Sud-Express trains from / to Lisbon to / from Vilar Formoso .
