Railway line in Lisbon subsequently hung under the Ponte 25 de Abril over the Rio Tejo

The Linha do Sul (German main line of the south ) is a Portuguese railway line that connects Tunes in the Algarve with the Portuguese capital Lisbon . Coming from Lisbon, the route crosses the Tagus River via the Ponte 25 de Abril ( 25 April Bridge ). This route was subsequently completed up to the Pinhal Novo railway junction in 1998, with the route under the Ponte 25 de Abril in a spectacular suspended construction . Before this time, rail travelers who wanted to travel to the south of Portugal had to accept a time-consuming ferry crossing across the Tagus from Terreiro do Paço station to Barreiro . The railway line from Barreiro to Pinhal Novo lost a lot of its importance due to the bridge connection over the Tejo, currently almost exclusively the suburban railway of the CP Urbanos de Lisboa is used there . Between Lisbon Roma-Areeiro and Setúbal, Portugal's only private train operator, Fertagus , operates an S-Bahn service.

The railway line, built in 1912, was electrified in 2004 between the Tunes and Faro railway junction with 25 kV and 50 Hz alternating current. Since then, the Portuguese high-speed train Alfa Pendular has been used on the Faro – Tunes – Lisbon route, and there are also daily direct connections between Porto and Faro.

The Linha do Sul line is the second most important rail route in Portugal , alongside the main Linha do Norte line , which connects Lisbon with Porto .
