Alvalade is a Portuguese municipality ( Freguesia ) and small town ( Vila ) in the district ( Concelho , also Município ) of Santiago do Cacém , with an area of ​​161.8 km² with 2098 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). The population density is 13 inhabitants per km².

Alvalade already received town charter in 1834 . Today Alvalade is an agricultural center with a few poultry farms. Alvalade dates back to the time of the Moors (around 900). The name of the place means al-balad in Arabic, surrounded by walls. The town center with a church and a small market square is typical of the Alentejo and is well preserved.
