Center of Cercal

Cercal was previously the capital of a district of the same name between 1836 and 1855. Today, Cercal belongs to the district of Santiago do Cacém , and received city rights on August 16, 1991 together with the name change from Cercal to Cercal do Alentejo . The place and municipality are geographically part of the Alentejo Litoral .

Serra do Cercal natural area

With a maximum height of 346 meters, the Serra do Cercal extends between the towns of Sines and Porto Covo in the west, Cercal do Alentejo in the south-east and Santiago do Cacém in the north-east, parallel to the coast. It is a formation of mountains with volcanic origin and its own vegetation. The highest point of the Serra do Cercal with 346 meters is the Monte Chaos.

From the 14th century, various ores (iron, magnesium, manganese) were mined in the area of ​​Cercal. The last mine was not closed until 2000. There were a total of 5 active mines in the 20th century: Cerro da Fonte, Santa de Cima, Toca do Mocho, Serra da Mina, Serra das Tulhas and Serra de Rosalgar, which essentially supplied the Seixal steel mills . To this day, the district of Cercal do Alentejo has large deposits of iron ore.
