Nature reserves

The Alentejo coast from Tróia to Zambujeira do Mar is rich in natural beauty. The unique coastline with its beaches, natural dunes and rocky coasts should be mentioned in particular. This coastal landscape was incorporated into the Southeast Alentejo Natural Park. In detail, there are the following protected areas:

Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano

The place Comporta borders the peninsula Tróia to the Natural Park of the Sado, Sado Estuary Natural Reserve , an area of 23,160 hectares of wetlands in the river delta. Here rice cultivation, fishing and salt extraction are traditionally carried out in salt pans. The nature reserve became famous for the occurrence of freshwater dolphins that live in the Sado Delta. In addition to a large number of storks that search the banks of the nature reserve and the rice fields for frogs, there are around 100 rare and protected bird species and unique bank vegetation.

In the area of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park there are a number of rare, protected bird species and the protected sparse coastal vegetation with large shifting dunes. The area's climate can be described as particularly mild despite the great influence of the Atlantic. Because of the high humidity, fog and haze often form.

The lake of Sancha , whose banks are also under nature protection, is less quickly accessible . Jonopsidium acaule Rchb comes from Lake Sancha . , a plant species endemic to the Portuguese coastal region.

In addition to the coastal areas, there is the Serra de Cercal in the east , which is of volcanic origin and whose highest point is the summit of Monte Chaos, and the Serra de Grândola , where cork trees are grown extensively.
