The nature reserve Reserva Natural do Estuário do Sado (German nature reserve Sado estuary ) is located in the south of Portugal and extends along the river delta of the Sado between the towns of Alcácer do Sal , Comporta and Setúbal along the Tróia peninsula on an area of ​​23,160 ha of which approx. 9500 hectares of wet bank zones are used as salt pans .

There are 261 species of vertebrates in the Reserva Natural do Estuário do Sado (RNES) . 211 species are birds, 31 mammals, 11 reptiles and aquatic animals. In addition, the protected Sado estuary in the nature reserve is a real “rearing basin” for fish such as the Lusitan toadfish (Halobatrachus didactylus), the two-banded bream (Diplodus vulgaris), the golden mullet (Liza aurata), the marble ray (Raja undulata), sole (Solea senegalensis) and rare freshwater dolphins .
